Michael Wooldridge breaks down a fundamental misconception about ChatGPT: "ChatGPT doesn't understand anything. All ChatGPT is doing is when you give it a piece of text, it's trying to predict what the next piece of text should be. And it's essentially doing some fancy statistics is what it boils down to." He explains that the system works by drawing on massive amounts of pre-existing text it has seen before, but this process has nothing to do with genuine comprehension. "It's not in any meaningful sense understanding. When you're having a conversation with ChatGPT, however dazzling it is, there is no mind on the other end." @wooldridgemike offers a striking thought experiment to illustrate the point: "If you're in the middle of a conversation with ChatGPT and you get up and go on holiday for a couple of weeks, it's not wondering where you are. It's not wondering anything at all. It's not aware of the passage of time because it isn't in the world at all." He continues: "It's a computer program which is just paused in a loop waiting to read the next piece of text that you would give it. And you give it the next piece of text when you get back from your holiday and it is not aware of the passage of time at all. It's disembodied from the world. So it's a fundamentally different kind of intelligence." This raises a deeper question about what AGI would even mean. For Wooldridge, an AGI that can't do something as simple as tidying his house would be a strange version of general intelligence: "A version of AGI which was not capable of doing something trivial like tidying up my house is a very uninteresting version of AGI. But there may be versions of general intelligence which don't involve the physical world, which are in the relatively near future."
