@GrumpyOldRick That's awful. It's disgusting the way the elderly are treated in this country.

@steve_motoperf @GrumpyOldRick This situation is not covered in the substantial polling station staff handbook, so, yes, it will take a phone call to electoral services. And they don’t give us spare envelopes. I did suggest doing so to the polling station inspector.

@steve_motoperf @GrumpyOldRick Asks for a postal vote. Forgets to post it. Doesn’t read the very clear instructions for how to seal it. Brings a secret ballot paper to the polling station without an envelope. And the staff are the morons?

@GrumpyOldRick Agree the policy should not have been introduced. Having been introduced, however, the guys handling polling have to apply the rules (and no doubt get loads of stick) - a bit rum calling them jobsworths Rick IMHO.

@SPC_304 @GrumpyOldRick Polling station staff have absolutely no “power” to issue ballot papers to anyone without valid photographic ID. They will be as helpful and friendly as they can – without breaking the law.

@GrumpyOldRick Sadly the last government brought it in to combat election fraud despite there not being much of that over here. It’s actually easier for older folk as they have more ID options. Tougher for 18+ voters who need to apply for specific ID as they won’t have any.

@GrumpyOldRick The vast majority of voter fraud takes place with postal voting and you don't need any ID at all for that

@GrumpyOldRick Pit the blame where it lies. Boris Johnson brought that rule in to discriminate against groups of people more likely to vote Labour. It was gerrymandered pure and simple

@GrumpyOldRick I and thousands of others sat in tiny rooms for 15 hours enabling a fair election for the whole population of this nation We all worked bloody hard to allow every legitimate vote The rule is for photo ID and has been for years, everyone can easily get one Jobsworth? Up Yours 🖕

@GrumpyOldRick Not jobsworths old son, just doing their work as laid out by election law brought in by the Tories. Been like that a few years now. She would have been advised she could either apply for a postal vote or contact her council for a free photo I.D.

@GrumpyOldRick Rick I really respect you but you are wrong on this, I worked at a polling station yesterday and 99.9% of people had the correct ID, even an old person's bus pass qualifies as well as many other forms of photo ID. We didn't make the rules but we have to enforce them.

@GrumpyOldRick This is the reality of Johnson and Garage creating a problem that didn’t exist and then spend loads of time solving it; than actually doing something meaningful to create a working society.

@GrumpyOldRick Blame the people who fucked up the system by trying to vote in other peoples names…..same people who take driving tests on behalf of others.

@GrumpyOldRick It was a law introduced to disenfranchise non-Tory voters, the nice old lady is collateral damage.

@GrumpyOldRick Don’t blame the staff. Blame the government whose harebrained idea it was. The staff have absolutely no discretion in the matter. A bus pass would have done. The staff will help as much as they can – within the law.

I’m delighted to appoint @HarrietHarman as my Adviser on Women and Girls. Harriet is a strong advocate for women and girls and I know she will deliver greater opportunity for women in public life. I’m committed to tackling structural misogyny that is a barrier for too many women and girls. I look forward to working with Harriet to drive forward action on this important issue.
