@KieranWarwick Exactly, extrinsic motivation is the biggest hindrance to Web3 gaming In a post scarcity world, money might become less relevant so web3 gaming will probably be more successful

2,000+ web3 games have launched. Yet all I hear is "there are no fun web3 games." Statistically, that's almost impossible. Even with debut studios, the sheer capital deployed makes "zero fun games" an anomaly. Something deeper is happening, and nobody talks about it. Here's the uncomfortable truth: Gamers weren't born "web3 gamers." They were gamers who discovered web3. And the moment you can earn money in a game, something irreversible happens in the brain. Earning becomes the dopamine. Not the gameplay. Not the progression. Not the story. The money. And once that switch flips, the monkey doesn't go back in the bottle. This is the overjustification effect in action. When extrinsic rewards are introduced, intrinsic motivation gets crowded out. The game didn't get worse. Your brain just rewired what "reward" means. So when earning slows or stops? Game = not fun. Doesn't matter how polished it is. Doesn't matter how good the combat feels. Your brain already decided what it's playing for - and it's not the gameplay. This is why the "play-to-earn" framing was always a trap. It trained an entire generation of players to optimise for extraction, not enjoyment. The solution isn't removing earnings. It's reordering priorities. There are two honest paths: Lean fully into earning. Make it the point. This is what we're doing with Deathmatch: real money stakes. Would I play it without the ability to earn? Honestly, probably not. And that's fine. It's designed for that. Build fun-first, earning as the cherry on top. This is Overworld. The entire game is built around progression systems, creature capture, quest completion, discovery, and boss battles. The loop is fun because the game is fun. Getting loot and being able to sell it? That's the cherry. But even here, the balance is razor-thin. Lean too hard on earning, and you topple into the same trap. The studios that unlock this will define the next era of gaming. But it's insanely hard to achieve, which is why it's easy to say that everyone who's tried is retarded and knows nothing about gaming. Some are getting it right, though. And being brutally honest, I didn't realise this when I first discovered web3 gaming 6 years ago. I just thought: people love games; people have always wanted to own their items so they can sell them (black markets prove this), so it is blatantly obvious that it will work, but it's way, way deeper than that. This is also why I get frustrated when I see people saying "rewards are the future." They're not. If monetary rewards are the first thing you push down a gamer's throat, you change their psychology immediately. You don't even stand a chance. Monetary rewards don't grow on trees. They run out. For everyone. Regardless of how big your treasury is. At one point, we had $1.6 billion of rewards sitting in our treasury. I fucking know. If your game isn't fun without the money, it was never a game. It was a job with better marketing.

@KieranWarwick Make illuvials drop bonuses when they get hit --> chaos Let us have 3 illuvials per player that play one after the other and respawn randomly each time --> comp building skill expression + chaos Increase their movement speed --> less waiting time

Introducing Illuvium Deathmatch: A blood sport where you throw your Illuvial into the arena against other players for real money. Last one standing wins. But here’s the catch. If your Illuvial dies, it’s gone forever. Deleted. Burned. Gone.

I wanted to share an update on chronic illness and burnout. For background, I have struggled with GI issues most of my life, but it came and went and I mostly coped. However, when Omicron COVID was surging, I got it and it pushed me over the edge. My energy, health, and pain continued to worsen for years. I lost jobs, I was hospitalized. I thought I was dying. Finally, I figured out my gut issues once and for all last October. Ultimately, I had leaky gut and streptococcus overgrowth, and my secretory IgA had collapsed (basically my gut immune system). Many of you have asked how I fixed it. Here's my protocol. 1) 60 days of L-Glutamine and Zinc Carnosine. This seals the gut. 2) 90 days of competitive exclusion probiotic therapy. I used about 15 different types of probiotics to rebalance my microbiome and kill off the excess strep. 3) I added traditional kefir to my diet, which provides about 1 trillion daily CFU of additional probiotics, plus it has many metabolites that also heal the guts. That fixed my guts but one problem is that having leaky gut for so long really harms the mitochondria. There are many pathways, but one of the primary mechanisms is LPS (lipopolysaccharides). What this does is reduce NAD+ which basically shuts off mitochondria biogenesis. You end up subsisting on inefficient glycolysis, rather than ATP energy. It's about 20x less efficient, so I was running on 5% of my energy reserves. So now I'm starting on a comprehensive mitochondrial rehabilitation regime. 1. Urolithin A - encourages mitophagy, which renews mitochondria 2. NR - boosts NAD+ and increases mitochondria biogenesis 3. PQQ - also enhances biogenesis 4. Spermidine - does both autophagy and biogenesis 5. Red light therapy - activates mitochondria through several pathways 6. CoQ10 - supports ETC in mitochondria 7. ALCAR - helps fuel mitochondria 8. Creatine - universal ATP precursor 9. R-ALA - antioxidant helps protect mitochondria 10. Magnesium - essential mineral used in 300 enzymes. Critical for mitochondria and ATP 11. NAC - universal detox (glutathione) helps protect mitochondria 12. Taurine - helps with mitochondrial RNA and respiration 13. Fish oil - anti-inflammatory 14. Vitamin D - anti-inflammatory I'm about 9 days in and starting to feel the effects. Beyond that I also have a few supplements to help with sleep (sleep disturbance is extremely common with this kind of pathophysiology). The sleep interventions that seem to working best: - L-theanine, lemon balm, and phosphatidylserine (PS) at bedtime - mechanical white noise generator (cannot recommend enough) - Windows open and CO2 sensor to keep CO2 in check (high CO2 dramatically impairs sleep) - L-theanine and magnolia bark for sleep rescue (when I wake up and can't get back to sleep) With any luck, by the end of May, I will have most of my energy back. I might be back to 3 hour bike rides, hiking in NC summer heat, and back to the gym.

A quick optimistic yet realistic view in what may be your feed of negativity: The arrival of millions of smarter-than-human AIs to help us is way way way more likely to … help us … than to hurt us. You probably don’t have to ‘prepare’ for artificial superintelligence… as @bryan_johnson says… just don’t die until it gets here.

It pisses me off that, in my last post, I mentioned crypto gaming sentiment being at an all-time low. That's an absolute cop out if I'm being honest. I was in a very small cohort of people years ago who saw the potential of crypto in gaming, and to think I've turned to posting crap like that is literally shameful. PMF is being found by teams everywhere. There is no excuse. I see the phoenix rising from the ashes; crypto gaming will dominate again.
