@MordyOberstein @semrush Interesting take, thanks for sharing! There's a dichotomy evident here: users want better content, but also like convenience. Which will win? By your judgement, convenience, and you may well be right. But there will always be those of us committed to quality and uniqueness.

My biggest takeaway from this study: The internet, as we know it, is in a death spiral I find this study from @semrush so interesting for all the wrong reasons. Let's play this out. chatGPT becomes increasingly more popular & takes more traffic from Google. This is going to happen. And that outcome is problematic. The amount of traffic that chatGPT & SearchGPT send to sites is really interesting. But what's more interesting is the divvying up of traffic by intent. Specifically more navigational searches happen on Google, not the GPT. It means, to me, that users don't see searchGPT or chatGPT as a portal to "more." They don't see it as a vehicle to getting to where they may ultimately want to go. It's an end. It's a place to get the information, not a facilitator. That's a huge distinction because, I speculate, it means that URL placement on searchGPT or chatGPT (or in Goolge's AI Overviews) doesn't mean the same thing as "traditional Google." There's less of an intent to move through (and the initial data on Google's AI Overviews from @wilreynolds & @glenngabe support this). So why is any of this "problematic"? Because at least with Google there was a chance. There was a theoretical chance that Google would be compelled to start ranking higher quality, more specific, content. And that this paradigm would result in content creators stepping their game up. With the GPT of it all, there is much less of a chance (and it wasn't very high with Google to begin with). It's far less likely that anything chatGPT or searchGPT does would create an incentive for the internet to create better content. LLMs don't need that better content in the same way that a traditional search engine does. At least they don't think they do- they think their regurgitation IS the better content. Now let's return to the death spiral. If LLMs think they are the next evolution the chances we see better content across the way goes down. As that happens & users demand better content (which has been a silent trend for a good while now) the internet as we know it will sink. Will it collapse? No, probably not. But the golden age of digital we have become so used to - will die. If I were a company, I would heavily invest in ensuring I have an offline presence to go with my online presence. It's a mistake to think that NATO support to Ukraine would be a provocation for Putin. He is provoked by the weakness, not by strength. There was no objective reason for Russia to invade Ukraine. Putin did it because he knew he would get away with it. Next move: attack on NATO
