The FY 2027 budget request proposes a 47% cut to NASA's Science Mission Directorate, reducing funding from $7.25 billion to $3.9 billion - the lowest level since 1984 in inflation-adjusted terms. If implemented, these cuts would: ➡️ Terminate 50+ science missions and projects: nearly half of NASA's portfolio across Earth Science, Heliophysics, Astrophysics, and Planetary Science. ➡️ Further disrupt the space workforce by laying off 2,000 civil servants and even more contractors. ➡️ Impact three-quarters of all congressional districts and all 50 states. NASA Science supports over 70,000 jobs and generates roughly $3 in economic activity for every $1 invested. This would cede U.S. leadership in space science to China and other nations. China is accelerating investments in space science. The budget also proposes canceling U.S. contributions to half of NASA's cooperative science missions with international partners. Space science is popular among Congress and the American public. In January 2026, the House voted 397-28 and the Senate voted 82-15 to reject proposed cuts to NASA Science of nearly identical scale. Didn't see the usual day-or-two-before heads-up for this, but China's human spaceflight agency announced Shenzhou-21 astronauts Zhang Lu & Wu Fei completed a 7-hour EVA at 1135 UTC today. The usual installation of debris protection devices among the tasks. cmse.gov.cn/xwzx/202603/t2…
