Update: the Satellite Tracking app can now show the Umbra and Penumbra as well as give a notification (shown lower right) when the sun is below the horizon and the satellite is still illuminated for night-time viewing. Go to Settings -> Night-time viewing to select these options.

Finns are usually very modest, but sometimes we brag about stuff. 😎 Finland is behind a planned cellular network on the Moon. 📡 The key player •Nokia is building a 4G/LTE network for the lunar surface 🚀 The mission •The system is planned to be deployed via NASA’s Artemis program, tied to missions like Artemis program •It’s part of NASA’s push to build a long-term presence on the Moon 🌕 What it will do •Provide wireless communication between landers, rovers, and possibly astronauts •Replace short-range radios with something more like Earth-style networking •Enable HD video, telemetry, and command/data transfer ⚙️ Why LTE (not something exotic)? •4G is: ◦proven and reliable ◦energy-efficient ◦already well understood and compact enough to adapt for space 🧠 Challenges •Extreme temperatures (−170°C to +120°C) •Radiation •No atmosphere → different signal behavior •Must be fully autonomous (no technicians on-site) ✅ Bottom line:
Finland (via Nokia) isn’t just contributing components — it’s helping build what could become the first mobile network on another world.

This thermal view of the Orion capsule coming down to splash down while on parachutes. Shows that thrusters are still firing even while gliding in on chutes.

@BG5JVM What radio are you using ? Well with RS-44 mid-frequency is the following, so I would first tune at these to start with and see if you can hear yourself +/- a little doppler:

@atrupar wow, that is really sad - with the average waiter making only about $37,000 per year getting an additional $3000 to $10,000 still has them below the poverty level. It helps, but a far cry for making a real difference.

Hassett: "Last night, I was in a restaurant and I asked every waiter, 'How much money did you make?' now that they're doing their taxes because of the no tax on tips. The lowest answer was $3,000 and the highest was $10,000. This is really an economy that can't be slowed down."

If you’ve ever been to Norway you’d realize it’s a very lovely place but the people live very utilitarian lives and there is nowhere near the quality of life you find in the US. It’s a nice, basic place to live with no urban turmoil, an homogeneous culture and not a lot of sunlight…

It’s a myth that the state doesn’t create wealth. While a thriving private sector was important, Norway became rich through state ownership in strategic sectors, strong public education, coordinated wage bargaining, universal healthcare, and productive tax rates.
Rock Chartrand🤑@RockChartrand

Norway isn’t rich because of welfare. It’s rich because of productive industries, capital accumulation, and markets that generate surplus. The welfare state spends that surplus. Wealth is created first. Then it’s redistributed. So the claim flips cause and effect. Social programs don’t create the wealth they rely on. They depend on it.

These coding "AI"s are only good to produce webslop, not intelligent DSP code, however straightforward it is. I asked ChatGPT and Claude Code to produce a LUT from a function I supplied. They never ran any code, and pretended their results were rock solid.

Just got off a call with a friend who got laid off from Oracle yesterday. His package was 48 LPA. Principal Software Engineer. 14 years at Oracle. He shifted his aging parents to live with him in Bangalore last year. Took a bigger house on rent. 85k per month. Two weeks ago, his VP gave him a spot bonus for exceptional leadership. Yesterday morning. No call. No warning. Just an automated HR email. He has two kids. One in college. One preparing for JEE next year. He didn't cry. He just sat silent for 5 minutes. Then said What do I tell my father? 14 years of loyalty. 48 LPA to zero in one email. And they still put People First in their job postings. Hypocrites.

@Jonatha59337719 @CountryFirstRep You're right. Without America NATO is nothing more than a glorified "kids club". With it's a force that holds Russia & China in check, at least for the most part. Russia and China would LOVE to see NATO gone. Europe isn't a threat to them, so they would both look towards America.

Yes*, but not everyone get's it off, so it is not a country-wide holiday, just federal workers. *Christmas has been a federal holiday since 1870, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed it into law (along with New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Washington's Birthday). All federal government offices, banks, the U.S. Postal Service, and many businesses are closed on Christmas Day. Federal employees get a paid day off. It is one of the 11 official federal holidays observed nationwide. Even though the U.S. has a separation of church and state, Christmas is recognized as a federal holiday primarily for its cultural and historical significance, not as an endorsement of religion.

I’m actually really surprised to learn that for the United States that bangs on so much about Christianity that Good Friday and Easter Monday are not federally mandated public holidays for the whole country 🤔 Here in Australia the whole country gets a 4 day long weekend, and those who have to work get paid penalty rates for it.
