Authorities said the investigation began earlier that day after reports of a shooting involving a white Mercedes on the Eisenhower Expressway. No injuries were reported in the expressway incident. According to Chicago police, investigators later identified the vehicle as connected to 42-year-old Derek Jordan. Several hours later, officers located the Mercedes near North Homan Avenue and attempted what police described as an investigatory stop. Officials said Jordan did not comply and drove away, leading officers on a brief pursuit through Humboldt Park. Police said the Mercedes struck a pedestrian during the chase before crashing in an alley near a CTA bus and other vehicles. Authorities reported that officers surrounded the vehicle and repeatedly ordered Jordan to exit. Investigators said Jordan instead attempted to move the Mercedes by striking the CTA bus and an unmarked police vehicle while officers were nearby. Body camera footage later released by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or COPA, captured officers surrounding the vehicle moments before an officer fired multiple shots through the passenger-side window. Witnesses at the scene were heard yelling for officers not to shoot as the vehicle remained wedged between surrounding objects.
