BREAKING: An American missionary has tested positive for Ebola. U.S. missionary organization Serge says one of its medical missionaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Peter Stafford, has tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola after treating patients at a hospital. Serge says two other missionaries who treated patients in the region, including Stafford’s wife, remain asymptomatic and are following quarantine protocols as officials respond to a growing Ebola outbreak in the region.

The New Jersey Department of Health been notified by the CDC that two New Jersey residents were potentially exposed to a person infected with hantavirus after that individual departed from the cruise ship MV Hondius. The residents were not passengers on the ship, and the potential exposure occurred during air travel abroad. Both individuals are being monitored in coordination with local health officials and are not currently showing symptoms. Risk to the public remains very low. There are no confirmed cases of hantavirus in New Jersey. We will continue to keep residents informed as the situation develops.

JUST IN: The World Health Organization is trying to ease global concerns about the recent hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship, drawing comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove clarifies that the newly identified hantavirus is vastly different from the coronavirus: "This is not coronavirus, this is a very different virus, we know this virus. Hantaviruses have been around for quite a while... This is not the start of a COVID pandemic, this is an outbreak that we see on a ship, there’s a confined area, we have 5 confirmed cases so far."

If I were mayor of Indianapolis, I’d put the pothole problem straight to voters: a referendum for a Local Income Tax at 0.25% “Fix Roads and Plow Streets” Referendum — a time-limited (10-year sunset), independently audited, dedicated fund with a spend formula that prioritizes residential streets (currently only 7% in good condition) and winter operations. No road diets, no transit, no streetscape. Just pavement and plows. This frees up other monies for the fun trails and complete streets and transit stuff while providing an annual match (~$55M) for state monies allocated by HB 1641 for roadways. Quality of life is how we will attract future workers. Good roads are good place to start.

Urban gun violence is the reality of what we are dealing with in Black America. Black Americans, especially males, are disproportionately affected by gun violence, making up 59% of firearm homicides in 2023 despite being a smaller population. The firearm homicide rate for Black males aged 15-34 is about 107.31 per 100,000, over 11.5 times higher than white peers. In 2023, 13,350 Black Americans died from gunshots, with a gun death rate of 29.4 per 100,000. Nearly 90% of Black homicide victims are killed with guns. There are a lot of factors that have led to urban gun violence that has disproportionately impacting black males that must be addressed.

Respectfully, Reverend, it's not "gun violence," it's "violent people violence." The guns did nothing. The PEOPLE holding them did. There is a sickness in the culture. We need to address that first.
