The official account: Returned to the angel Moroni Joseph Smith stated that, once the translation was complete, he returned the plates to the angel (identified as Moroni) who originally delivered them to him. In his official 1838 history (now canonized as Joseph Smith—History 1:60 in the Pearl of Great Price), Smith wrote: “When, according to arrangements, the messenger called for them, I delivered them up to him; and he has them in his charge until this day.” This is the version consistently presented in official Latter-day Saint histories and teachings. The plates were taken back into the angel’s custody (often understood as being removed from the earth or kept in heaven), and Moroni “has them in his charge.” Smith did not provide further details about the return or the angel’s actions.
