The events that precipitated the Bear River Massacre involved a party of settlers getting attacked and a 5 y/o girl having her legs cut off and being made to walk on the stubs. Doesn’t say much for the Natives if the worst things Americans ever did was imitate their tactics.

Connor was a straight up psychopath and this wouldn't be his last massacre. He did another one at Tongue Creek during the Powder River expedition. He was aching to get into a fight when he had been denied the opportunity to command in the Civil War, and got the duty of watching Mormons in fear that they might revolt. There are many bands of Shoshone and there is no evidence the attacks in the Cache Valley, the premise for the operation, were attached to the NW Band Shoshone in their Winter encampment. While the massacre did happen there was an actual battle. Connor's second in command did not wait on Connor's orders and rushed the encampment and that got bogged down. It wasn't until after the Shoshone ran out of ammo that they surrendered and then the massacre began. The depth of the massacre was confirmed my Mormon settlers in the Cache Valley who came upon the scene and took in many of the orphans. All accounts demonstrate it was horrific in barbarity and scale. It is also wild to think that Porter Rockwell was the scout on this mission, and that Connor remained indebted to him for the rest of Ol' Port's life for Port's efforts to evacuate his wounded men to LDS homes. This despite Connor's antipathy to the church in general. The history is so much wilder than anyone can imagine.
