Working at a company where half the people are based in Germany 🇩🇪 and the other half are based in the US 🇺🇸 really gives you a perspective on how both of these people think and work. Germans are super high maintenance to work with, every new idea needs to come w a set of predefined rules and structure before action is taken meanwhile with Americans you give them some crumbs and as long as the idea feels and seems good they will jump into it and solve problems as they go. Germans think the “American way” is inefficient or careless but the reality is that life is rarely predictable and often rewards action and speed over cautiousness or fear of failure. I think Americans are right about this, risk is something to be managed in motion. Action creates information. Yes, the cost might be rework and sometimes chaos but the upside is momentum and learning.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (Blizzard, 2002) revolutionized RTS gaming with its 3D graphics, hero units that level up and wield items, and four playable races: Humans, Orcs, Undead, and Night Elves. This was towards my later university days - and boy did I have some long gaming nights (campaign or LAN 1v1s or 2v2s), and missed some classes because of this... The campaigns chronicle Arthas's tragic fall, the Scourge's rise, and Azeroth's defense against the Burning Legion, laying lore foundations for World of Warcraft. The World Editor later paved the way for custom maps like Defense of the Ancients, spawning the MOBA genre and esports giants. Expanded by The Frozen Throne in 2003, it sold millions and won Game of the Year. Patches are still being released in 2025, showing the incredible standing that the whole Warcraft RTS universe still has.

"Murder rates would be up to five times higher than they are but for medical developments over the past 40 years...Without this technology, there would be no less than 50,000 and as many as 115,000 homicides annually instead of an actual 15,000 to 20,000" ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

@nateliason We don’t need to understand the assembly code that a compiler outputs because the compilation process is deterministic. We do need to understand the high level code that a model outputs because there is nothing deterministic about the process and, ideally, software should work

@Sentdex What i mean to say is that abstraction seems to have some trade offs. And because of that is not always better.

@Sentdex C++ and Python serve different needs. For something where performance is important ( a lot of critical systems we use daily) you cannot use python and you are forced to understand things at a lower level.

All innovation and the gains from industrialization is due to abstraction. When I first got into programming Python, this was the standard take for people using Python. The concern was that Python abstracted away too much from "real" languages like C++ and that you weren't going to learn proper computer science if you didn't know C++. Many of my viewers were also students who would tell me how their professors taught in C++ because Python was too high level in their opinion. The thing is, when C++ came out, it too faced this exact standard take. It was accused of being too high level compared to C and assembly. C++ even faced the same claims that Python faces about how the abstraction would negatively impact performance and that it was too much bloat. You already know what I'm about to say about Assembly... but it too was accused of being too high level by the TRUE machine coders. We can look back at all of this and laugh, but it's important to recognize that for the entire course of history, not just for computer science, all innovation has been abstraction. That's been the key the entire time, but the next layer of abstraction has been accused of being not real and fear mongered by the local purists of the time...but eventually becomes the thing that the same purist types point to later as the "good ol times."

The Spanish, when they colonized the Americas, focused on extracting existing wealth The English focused on building new wealth Which led to the global superpower? Parasitism always looks good in the short term, but the long term always favors creators
