The Japanese gunboat continued firing as the submarine slipped beneath the surface. The crew rigged her for silent running and crept away into deeper water. Sometime later Schade brought her back to the surface. He searched the dark water for any sign of Gilmore. There was nothing. The Hayasaki had also disappeared. Both ships had survived the ramming. Only Gilmore had not. He had drifted away in the night. Growler limped back to Brisbane on February 17 1943 with her bent bow. Lieutenant Commander Schade gave the official report. The story was kept from the public for three months. On May 7 1943 the Navy finally released a communique about what had happened in the Bismarck Sea. It made the front page of newspapers across America. On August 18 1943 a ceremony was held in New Orleans. Rear Admiral Andrew Bennett presented the Medal of Honor to Howard Gilmore's widow Hilda. She was wearing a black dress and a mourning veil. Their 10 year old son Howard Jr. stood beside her. Hilda took the medal and draped it around her son's neck. Howard Gilmore became the first American submariner to receive the Medal of Honor in World War II. Six more would follow over the course of the war. In September 1943 the United States Navy commissioned a new submarine tender called the USS Howard W. Gilmore. Hilda Gilmore broke the bottle of champagne against the bow herself. The Growler returned to combat. She sank 15 Japanese ships across 11 patrols. In November 1944 she vanished in the South China Sea with all hands. She remains on eternal patrol today. "Take her down" became one of the most legendary phrases in the history of the United States Submarine Force. A boy from Selma, Alabama who gave his life for his crew on a dark night in the South Pacific. I post a story like this every single day. Most people never see them.
