I just wanna say, the courtship culture of Orthodoxy in America feels more toxic than any other religious or social group in the world. Beyond the growing gender gap with the extremely picky hypergamy of young women in the Church here, and the strong ethnic preferences among cradle Orthodox young women, even beyond just the ever worsening economic situation in the west. The most toxic is the rhetoric we so often hear that young men have to become literal Saints and have the spiritual strength of Great Schema Monk to be worthy of marriage. We always hear, you're too passionate, you're lustful, you're not praying enough, you're not fasting good enough, you don't have a good enough prayer rule, you're not doing enough Spiritual readings, you're not doing enough various tasks in your Parish. Eventually, it's hard to not feel like you're never gonna be enough. I say Orthodoxy in America because this kind of pressure is not put on Orthodox men in Eastern Europe, only American Orthodox for some reason. In Eastern Europe as long as your masculine, have at least an average salary for your country's standards, and go to Church at least a few times a year, that's considered good enough over there to be worthy of marriage. Not here, here young men are told that have to have faith the size of mustard seed and be able to spiritually move mountains to be worthy of marriage. What bothers me more about this St. Paul the Apostle said in 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 that marriage is designed by God for men and women who are weak in their spiritual struggle. Yet the common rhetoric of Orthodoxy in America says the opposite, that because you're weak in your spiritual struggle you're undeserving of marriage. It's really hard for young men to not feel despair and want to give up because of this enormous pressure and extremely high standards. The national average of young men getting married by age 30 has fallen to 16%. Which means for young Orthodox men in America that average has probably fallen to around 5%, and frankly, the Church offers no real solutions to this problem other than just telling young men they're not good enough.

@Son_of_Mars_III It’s on the long list of movies that, depending on when you watch it, you realize the “villain” was correct the entire time.

@DocFager @Teri_Rem @AngloVarangian This thread is about getting our young men married and women into the Church. I think whether you’ve had any success in getting married yourself is relevant to how seriously people should take what you’re saying here

@Teri_Rem @Starobeary @AngloVarangian Women aren't interested in truth. The paradox of women is that they only become (somewhat) selfless AFTER they have kids and are invested there. This is why more married women are "conservative". And single? You know the deal. The most easily propagandized "persons" of all time.

@Wildganse14 Try and find a trade that will give you enough money to support a family and will force you to be around/interact with women on a regular basis. Avoid things like welding jobs where you’re just surrounded by men all day

@Wildganse14 @AngloVarangian @katherineortho Ask your female friends who are married (close to your age) what you ought to work on and to be brutally honest. I wish I had more advice I could give you, but it genuinely wasn’t this bad when I was in my 20’s

@Starobeary Again, I am saying this goes beyond the problem of demographics, and outside the Church marriage statistics for young people aren't much better at all. I also said this in the post

@AngloVarangian @katherineortho For real. Social media is pushing the sexes apart and it’s turning men into incels who hate women and women into hypergamist “trads” or full on misandrists. Half of my feed is slop meant to make me think women are cheating, gold digging whores…

@AngloVarangian @GnomeRad I’ve been around for a long time and got married long before it got bad, but I’m glad I married an American convert girl and listened to my Eastern European friends who told me to stay away from those women. Slavic trad girls are RARE.

@AngloVarangian The way women in America speak to men in general is absurd. Anyone who has been to Europe/Russia or Asia recognizes the difference immediately

@AngloVarangian So, as a result, we have way more men than women and women have their pick of the litter as if were. If you were surrounded by women desperate to get married and they were throwing themselves at you, you would have the luxury of being picky

@AngloVarangian Demographics problem. Our entire approach to evangelism is being d-bags and that only appeals to men. We really overplayed the whole “Orthodoxy: It’s Christianity for MANLY MEN. Anyways, here’s Andrew Wilson coming on the podcast to grift”

@EthanWayne2001 I can only think of two of his spiritual children that did not end up in the canonical Church after the reunion, one of which he got mad at for freaking out over a young Roman Catholic man being accepted by confession of faith.

By canonizing a saint in the person of Father Seraphim Rose, ROCOR is really showing itself to be an anachronism, since he assuredly would have condemned the ROCOR of today as heretical sell-outs to Sergianism and ecumenism. The sanitized image of Rose that people are promoting can only do two things, promote a willful ignorance of the reality of his convictions, or mainstream Old Calendarism under the guise of popular piety. Either way, ROCOR has exposed its appropriation of Rose as fraudulent. His cultus will be that of a fictional simulacrum of the man, not the man himself.

After Fr. Seraphim Rose moved to Platina, his mother Esther wrote to him, saying, “So you have taken the big step to become a monk…. I hope your contribution to the world won’t go by unnoticed… Love, Mother.” His contribution certainly has not gone unnoticed.

@ArchangeloRom Also because they no longer believe in polygamy in this life if you are a widower/widow, you can remarry but have to either not be sealed to your new spouse (leaving them without you in the Celestial Kingdom) or cuckold your old spouse by sealing the new

On July 4th this country will celebrate its “independence” in the midst of its most oppressive subjugation. The bravery and virtue of the Founding Fathers will be extolled while political violence is decried (they’ll “remind” us that it’s “never the answer”). We will take great pride in rejecting a 2% tea tax while having 40% of each paycheck stolen, so…what exactly is the point of this “holiday,” if not just further humiliation?
