Ah yes, the classic "2 hours spent figuring out why I'm not getting a particular window message"... Wouldn't be a win32 interaction otherwise.

The Teardown Multiplayer project was a tricky one. It's finally out, and I wrote up the technical details on what we went through to get there: blog.voxagon.se/2026/03/13/tea…

@AffinityPlay See this video section for example. File hierarchy is never the best way to navigate assets, so hand-optimizing for that is total waste *if* the editor does a good job. I deleted the file hierarchy in my editor. youtu.be/dePFAcBLLpc?si…

@StefDevs It's definitely a time-consuming task, but I'm not sure if it should do it for me.

One of the most challenging things in game dev is keeping all of your assets organized. It's a constant struggle. 🧘🏼‍♂️

TEAM FAT STRUCT
Vjekoslav Krajačić@vkrajacic

It's incredible how often I work with my "pig hat" on, and yet people are always surprised by how small File Pilot is, both as an .exe and in memory usage. Previously, I would always be very rigorous about whether to go with a discriminated union or a fat struct. These days, I just default to a fat struct, do some basic math on the memory usage, and roll with it. To put myself in a @cmuratori mood from the video: "Forget about it, everything is in there. The whole thing. Everything is in there. Everything. Not some of it, not a little bit of it, the whole thing is there. Every last bit. It's all there." youtu.be/hwLSZuxK6aU?t=… I can always compact it with a discriminated version later, if needed.

Update: The same laptop just did the thing where it tries to burn my home down by getting really hot in my backpack. God damn it man...
StefDevs@StefDevs

@Jonathan_Blow Aside from some driver issues this has been my experience as well on the x9. Intel (and Sensel) has finally made laptops livable.

In my opinion, Dune Messiah is not a good sequel and not a satisfying book. While Dune is a masterpiece, ambitious and immersive, I found Dune Messiah to be ineffective as fiction, a real letdown. And when Children of Dune came out, I realized that what Herbert cared about in the Dune series was not at all what I wanted to pursue in sequels. So I decided to be content with Dune as a standalone novel and allow the rest of the series to float by, unread by me. Thus I am unqualified to say anything intelligent about the sequels, beyond, "These are not the books I'm looking for."
Drew Carson@realdrewcarson

I'm currently reading Dune: Messiah (in preparation for the movie later this year), and I notice that it uses an omniscient perspective to jump between the heads of almost all the characters. Everyone in this book is a plotter of one variety or another. Surely, at least one of these characters is hiding something critical. Is there a specific reason Frank Herbert is able to get away with this? Or do you not like these books very much? 😄

@BirdtekGames Think about what's special about your game and what sets it apart, then figure out how to tell stories about it. Create content with those stories in order to communicate with potential players how it's special. Good luck to you!

Indie Game Devs: Your potential customer base is much larger than you think. Once I realized how this really works, it resulted in a massive influx of sales. Let me explain: For background, my spellcrafting game, Spellmasons, had plateaued for years and was losing traction when I recommitted myself to marketing. This resulted in my 3rd year, post launch, beating all the other years combined. Here's what I figured out that made this happen: - Your game is an asset you'll own forever - Everybody says launch causes the most sales and that's just not true for indies because indies usually don't reach anywhere near their Total Addressable Market in terms of exposure - chances are, indies will literally never reach every eyeball that might be a potential buyer, which means there are always more potential customers who would love your game if only they hear about it And even more importantly: New gamers are getting old enough to sign up for steam for the first time every. single. day. If I restart marketing in 5 years, there'll be 5 whole years worth of new gamers who might be interested. It's literally millions of new players every year. You'll never run out of people who are hearing about your game for the first time, no matter how viral your content is.
