the part they left out: these dogs were stolen for the dog meat trade in Jilin, China. Jilin province has 50+ slaughterhouses. they escaped from a moving truck, formed a defensive formation around an injured german shepherd, and a corgi navigated them 17km home over 2 days. they were all neighborhood dogs who played together every day. they all made it back. China still has no national ban on dog meat, but Shenzhen banned it in 2020.

Seven dogs stolen from their owners have gone viral after escaping their captors and making their way home The group is believed to have travelled around 17 km together led by a corgi across highways and fields

@EDouglasWW @showbiz411 @TheAcademy Jim Jarmusch is smart and a hell of a nice guy — we have hung out briefly and were near-contemporaries at NYU film, so I’m partial! — but I think he and his movies are still way too East Village for the Academy. Which he is more than fine with.

I rewatched the excellent Ghost Dog again over the weekend, and I am absolutely shocked that Jim Jarmusch has never been nominated for a single Oscar, either for writing or direction. I feel @TheAcademy should rectify this with a Governors Award... soon. So deserved.

@Noirchick1 Loved how Victor Buono went from Bette's possible lover in Baby Jane to her father in Charlotte. Also Bruce Dern as Charlotte's beau

@DonaldClarke63 I would suggest that their “invasion” of Germany in ‘45 was not protested in most of the world.

I was a huge fan of Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, and Michael Winterbottom’s THE TRIP films, but now I’m watching the full TV series versions of them on the @criterionchannl, and it is dawning on me that this is one of the great artistic accomplishments of the century.

@noirgal17 @LiterateIndy What’s worse than a bookshelf full of Readers Digest Condensed Books? A bookcase with a few decorative geegaws and no books at all.

@LiterateIndy I will say, in their defense, that Readers Digest Condensed Books had a place on my grandparents’ bookshelf, in addition to many other great books, and played a huge part in getting us grandkids to read. Reading them prompted me to then read the original!

@TomDohertyfilm I asked Norman Lloyd if he thought the resemblance was intentional and he laughed. “Of course!”

@StephenWhitty Good point. I believe it was Mike Epstein in his documentary HITCHCOCK, SELZNICK, AND THE END OF HOLLYWOOD (1998) who first noticed the resemblance between Lars and DOS.

Not only did Hitchcock make his villain look like Selznick, but I always felt the character -- a man who sells cheap junk by day, then butchers by night -- was an even sharper, subtler jab at his old boss.
Thomas Doherty@TomDohertyfilm

Hitch denigrated REBECCA because he couldn't abide the fact that it was as much a David O. Selznick as a Hitchcock picture--and that DOS was clearly right about shooting it from the second Mrs. de Winter's perspective. Hitch got his revenge in REAR WINDOW.

OK, two things: One, if someone writes something for you, that's still a human being doing the writing, not an AI program. That's the difference. And Two, "Nobody questions if those are really his books"? Well, I certainly do. As would any self-respecting writer.
Josh Daws@JoshDaws

James Patterson is one of the biggest selling authors of all time. He’s had over 100 NYT bestsellers and cranks out 10-15 books a year. He pretty much admitted he writes an outline and has assistants write a draft which he polishes. Nobody questions if those are really his books. So explain to me why using AI the same way is cheating. telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/…
