Mad on wildlife and travelling the world to see it. I also enjoy 'alternative' music, reading, cycling and running oh and the odd glass of wine.

Long shot and a long time away but if any mammal watching followers are interested I am keen to get a group together to do a 4 - 6 person trip to Mongolia in August 25.

@CleyBirds Oh dear, I’m afraid if a name ends in an ‘s’ then the possessive gets an ‘s, not a terminal apostrophe, those are reserved for possessive plurals. So the correct version, for someone named Daukes, would be either ‘The Daukes Hide’ or ‘Daukes’s Hide’. @Lesditch 😉 #GrammarPolice

Oh dear: lovely new signs on the Cley NWT hides, but time for the Apostrophe Police! Our most famous hide is Daukes Hide or Daukes' Hide, but definitely not Dauke's Hide! It's named after the prominent early 20C birder Major Archibald Daukes. Respect required!

My cat list has only gone up one in the last 7 years so my new year's resolution was to do something about that. Hopefully more will follow. Cat no. 15: Bobcat, Point Reyes, California.

@WiseBirding What are the advantages of going in winter compared to the summer?

I think it’s fair to say our Winter Mongolia Snow Leopard trip has been a success once again! 😮🤯😍 A simply amazing few days. More photos and video to come. Fancy joining us next winter?

As a bit of an experiment, I've put together a custom Google Map showing access, parking and view points for birding at Abberton Reservoir: google.com/maps/d/edit?mi… . With the Waterthrush / Canvasback duo still around, hope this will help visitors!

Next up for passing on is this very good field guide. A bit dated (published last millennium!) but free to a young naturalist keen to start out on Odonata. The life history, distribution and habitats pages are really useful.

The NHS is by no means perfect, but no one in the UK has ever been declared bankrupt because of medical bills. Yet. We must never take our NHS for granted - please RT if you agree.

@stuttonsparrows We used to liven up drives to twitches by seeing who get closest to the tally.

Today's Northern Waterthrush gave me a flashback to the classic 80s Shell Guide. I always enjoyed the current tally figure the book provided. Two up to 1983 it says.

@birdingpete Bought. Have you got a spare spare quick-release plate for yours; if so, what one did you get? The Gitzo one if over £50.

Can any birding friends recommend a tripod head? I want to get rid of my 128RC as it wobbles terribly. I want it light but steady. It will be used with both a 65mm scope and a 82mm one.

@birdingpete I think it is what I'll go for. £251 is the cheapest price that I can find.

@SteveBabbs I use it with Swaro 85mm... smooth as! I actually have the Swaro version of it, but that cost even more!

@suffolkbirder Thanks. That is one I have been considering. The 900g + does put me off a bit.
