Statements from American health authorities that are obviously false and taught me not to trust them. “Masks will not help you avoid the SARS-2 virus. But we need all the masks for medical professionals who are most exposed.” “Large gatherings are dangerous. But large gatherings to support a good cause are okay.” “All teachers must be prioritized for receipt of the new vaccine regardless of how young they are. But schools should remain closed even after all teachers are vaccinated.”

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

The number of U.S. student visas issued in India the busiest summer months fell more than 60 percent ahead of the current academic year. Colleges hoped some of the backlog could be handled in September. It didn't happen: State Dept data show just 706 student visas were processed.

Ending the myth that you earn your social security benefits by paying your social security taxes is important. Once it is acknowledged that social security is a redistribution scheme, then the questions naturally arise: Why should only above average wage earners be taxed to pay for other people’s benefits? Why are business profits and capital gains exempt from sharing this redistribution burden?

This would mean ending the myth that you earn your security benefits by making your “contributions” - rather than it being an old age welfare program. The current system is massively redistributional, but retains a fig leaf to sustain the myth of earning benefits by paying taxes. Taxes you pay on above-median wages still earn 1/7th the benefits increase as the first dollars of tax on lower wages. It’s peanuts, but at least it’s something.
Jessica Riedl 🧀 🇺🇦@JessicaBRiedl

Yes, capping Social Security benefits at $100k for a couple is a no-brainer. The program is headed to insolvency and, no, eliminating the tax wage cap is not close to enough. An easy place to start is capping the maximum benefit that dwarfs even Europe and Canada.

With return of algebra to San Francisco schools, Oakland Unified is now the only Bay Area school district to systematically deny all 8th grade students algebra instruction. Students have to take it externally if they want to take Geometry in 9th grade.

@MsMelChen @HeywoodFloyd10 Order (protection from private coercion) is necessary for liberty. Borders are not strictly necessary for liberty and prosperity, and borders in practice have often been used to restrain liberty.

Growing up means abandoning the childish fantasy that sees liberty as a natural phenomenon that emerges only once the State is minimized and individuals are simply left to their own enlightened self-interest. It means finally coming to terms that liberty is only possible within strategic bounds, built on a substrate of constraints.
Balaji@balajis

Libertarianism in theory requires Lee Kuan Yew in practice. Order and borders are prerequisites for liberty and prosperity. Tolerance and internationalism enables trade and capitalism. Pragmatism about the scope of the state minimizes the scope of the state.

Immigrants and US sponsors paid over $1 billion in fees for applications the government isn’t processing, per 2024 data, says Cato’s @David_J_Bier. “If applicants aren’t eligible, deny them—but don’t take their money and withhold the service,” he adds. ow.ly/tYKb50YxPTN

So far, entry-level share of employment in legal, financial, & office admin occupations doesn't look functionally different from pre-2023 trends (the population is aging so important to benchmark). A bit above trend for legal, a bit below for finance, in line for office admin.

Standardized tests are color blind. Teachers, like college admissions officers, are not. Standardized tests should dominate the process of selecting which students are ready for a challenge, whether it be 8th grade Algebra or a demanding university curriculum.

The line at IAH may become a new type of microsociety. Babies will be born in the line. They’ll grow up knowing of nothing outside the line. The line will develop its own language, its own culture
amanda moore 🐢@noturtlesoup17

When you arrive at Terminal E at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, the line outside looks fairly manageable. But in reality, it starts in the basement, goes up a floor and zigzags through baggage check, then runs outside before snaking around the check in counters.
