@AaronBastani I was going to suggest Newport. I’m from nearby and its decline over 30 years has been dramatic.

Much bigger places, with higher ceiling but I’d say Newport is in mix. 10 mins to Cardiff. 30 mins to Bristol. Even now really pretty buildings in city centre (albeit most aren’t in best state). Loads of Victorian housing stock (sure, this could be many places). Let down!

Which U.K. town or city has the potential to be a brilliant place to live and work but is really underperforming? (Can be for any reason: eclipse of manufacturing, central government uselessness, local government incompetence, or all of the above?
