Utah multifamily is one of the few markets where the fundamentals still quietly outperform the headlines. • Top-tier population growth (driven by jobs, not speculation) • Land constraints + disciplined development • Household formation > new supply over the long run While others chase “story markets,” Utah keeps compounding. We’re seeing opportunities today to buy quality assets below replacement cost with long-term rent growth tailwinds intact. This is how you generate real, tax-efficient wealth over a full cycle—not just chase yield. Family offices that understand durability > hype will do very well here.

What’s the name of the disease that inflicts people on vacation where after an amazing 48 hours they are already looking at real estate listings and mentally restructuring their entire lives to move to the vacation spot?

Experience is essential for learning but paradoxically, it can also get in the way. I call this the “paradox of experience.” The core issue here is that we process outcomes sequentially, treating each single result as if it reveals whether a decision was good or bad, even though a single outcome is just one realization of a probabilistic set. To simplify, I like to use my “Cognitive Chain Saw” metaphor. Before a decision, and looking into the future, we see a “tree of possibilities”. Think of the trunk as the present, and various branches representing different ways the future could unfold. After an outcome, once a specific future event occurs, our minds use a cognitive chain saw to hack off the branches that didn’t happen. We leave only the branch that occurred, making the past appear linear and inevitable, rather than probabilistic. The danger here is hindsight bias, causing us to believe that we “knew it all along” or “should have known”, simply because the other possibilities have vanished from our view. To solve the paradox of experience and counter the cognitive chain saw, we have to deliberately reassemble the tree. We must remind ourselves of the full range of potential futures that existed at the time of the decision. Only then can we fairly evaluate the quality of the process rather than the luck of the outcome. Still overwhelmed by the possibilities? I teach a live, online cohort-based @MavenHQ course on how to make smarter, faster, and more confident choices, including how to: - Strengthen analytical reasoning and strategic thinking in complex or ambiguous situations. - Use probabilistic thinking to make sound decisions even when outcomes are unclear. - Enhance collaboration and group reasoning using structured input and feedback techniques. My next Maven cohort starts April 20th. Join us with this offer: bit.ly/4amUIc

Hang out with men & women in genuinely happy marriages... Hear how they talk about each other, see how they support each other, and cheer each other on... You'll realize that the slop online throwing hate is so wasteful & that life can be oh so grand.

At the tail end of a vacation, do you catch yourself browsing local real estate listings and joking with your spouse: “What if we just moved here?” Then you quickly dismiss it as unrealistic. Let me ask you a question: How’s the water? 👇
Kevin Dahlstrom@Camp4

An older fish swims up to a group of younger fish and says, “Good morning boys, how’s the water?” One of the younger fish responds, “What the hell is water?” Sometimes the most obvious and important truths are hard to see. They’re defaults that we unconsciously accept. Those defaults are limitations. The young fish doesn’t know there’s a whole other world above the water’s surface. 🐟 You’re the fish. Do you sense that there’s more out there—an alternate universe where you’re living your best life? At the tail end of a vacation, do you catch yourself browsing local real estate listings and joking with your spouse: “What if we just moved here?” Then you quickly dismiss it as unrealistic. Let me ask you a question: How’s the water? Are you aware of the defaults you’ve unconsciously accepted—and the limitations they impose? At least a dozen times a month, I get a DM from someone who is contemplating a big life change—usually a career pivot or moving to a new place. I always challenge them to answer one question: What would the radical version of your next step look like? We tend to approach change incrementally, operating within the bounds of our default environment. But the people with the best lives are those who realize they’re swimming in water—and occasionally leap from it. 🐟 (This post was inspired by David Foster Wallace’s legendary 2005 commencement speech, “This Is Water.” He uses the metaphor to make a different point, but it’s worth reading.)

Ludicrous My siblings & I were homeschooled K-12. My brother went to MIT, my sister got into Princeton at 16, my other sister got a full scholarship for vocal performance & I went to Penn We're also all married & have 2+ kids By ~any metric we are healthy, productive citizens
Colin@Colin_d_m

Homeschooling should be illegal. “But I teach my kids better than the state!” Doesn’t matter, the primary purpose of elementary/middle school isn’t to teach it’s to socialize your kid. You can’t do that alone. And this isn’t even mentioning how it can be used to abuse kids

Tomorrow, I will attempt the impossible. I will try to go an entire day without working. I can't remember the last truly work-free day (other than perhaps a transcontinental flight with children). I don't take pride in this...there's just always something more to do. It's time to put my foot down and relax. We'll see whether I succeed 🤣
