I feel like it’s a mistake not to take that. $50 million+ per year is great and I get that he probably wanted more than 2 years, but the reason his peers got longer deals is because they became franchise guys a lot faster. I don think you understand how contracts work. Example: the $40 million this year. It’s not just a new $40 million this season; it’s partially rolling over from what he already earned last year. That shifts the perception of the cap hit and the deal’s structure. It’s very possible they were doing the exact same thing with the APY in those two years. Not to mention the guaranteed money has been reported to be hilariously low. Nuance.

You’re missing my overall point. Baker wants to be paid like a top-tier quarterback, but when the season was on the line, he didn’t perform like one. Over the final eight games, he averaged only 188 passing yards, threw 10 touchdowns to 9 interceptions, and Tampa went 2–6. And the roster was getting healthier down the stretch—not more depleted. Injuries may explain some of the struggles, but they don’t excuse the quarterback’s performance. If you want top-tier money, you have to elevate the team when it matters most—not disappear during the collapse.

I don’t use injuries as an excuse. Tampa wasn’t the only team destroyed by injuries. Detroit had a historically injured defense, and San Francisco had major stars out while Brock Purdy missed eight games. The 49ers still went 12–5 and won a playoff game. Baker started all 17, and Tampa finished 8–9. Injuries hurt, but they don’t excuse everything.

Not disagreeing with you there you’re absolutely right. This isn’t the 1999 Buccaneers defense where they have to score points. His team has more than enough weapons on offense to dominate a game. Does that come down to coaching absolutely. But the ball is in the quarterbacks hand.
