My monologue from today’s The Times at One with Andrew Neil @TimesRadio ROYAL NAVY RIP While US destroyers duke it out with Iranian navy fast boats over the Strait of Hormuz, we learned yesterday that the Royal Navy’s HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 frigate, was being withdrawn from active service, despite a recent £100m five-year refit, which suggests that was largely a waste of money.  More important, it underlines the stark reality that we no longer have a functioning navy.  That’s right. The country of Rule Britannia, which once had the most powerful navy in the world, capable of protecting an empire which covered a quarter of the globe, no longer has a navy worthy of the name.   For the factual basis of what I’m about to say, I am indebted to Britsky, who posts important naval data on X and has become the reliable go-to source for information on our disappearing Navy.  HMS Iron Duke joins another ageing Type 23, HMS Richmond, in retirement. Leaving the Royal Navy with just five frigates to monitor Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic and other Russian activity in the Channel.  Even that doesn’t reveal the full, desperate picture. Of the five frigates still supposedly available for service, one, HMS Kent, has been almost 750 days in refit and is not available for service. HMS Portland and HMS St Albans have also been laid up for some time.  Only HMS Somerset is currently deployed and HMS Sutherland could be, pretty quickly. So the Royal Navy can call on the immediate services of only two of the five frigates we have, all dating from the 1990s.  What about the more powerful Type 45 destroyers? Sad to relate the picture is even bleaker. There are only six. One, HMS Dragon, has been deployed to the East Mediterranean to protect Cyprus, though that took some time.  Another, HMS Daring, has been in refit for 3,260 days and still not available for duty. HMS Defender has been out of action for over 1,000 days, HMS Diamond for just under 700 days. HMS Dauntless is in maintenance. Other than Dragon, out of our six destroyers, only HMS Duncan could be deployed quickly.  What about our hugely expensive, powerful Astute class submarines? Better you don’t ask. We have only five — and only one, HMS Anson, is on active service somewhere in the Indian Ocean.  The other four — Astute, Ambush, Artful and Audacious — have been laid up for a total of 4,000 days. That’s right 4,000 days. HMS Ambush alone has been inactive for 1,400 days. It’s currently laid up on the River Clyde.  So the currently deployable, conventional Royal Navy, excluding the ancient, creaking subs carrying our nuclear deterrent, amounts to two frigates, two destroyers and one sub. That’s not a navy for a maritime nation. That’s a joke.  Yes, we have two big aircraft carriers too. They also seem to spend a lot of time in maintenance, which is where they are at the moment. But both could currently be deployed pretty quickly, which is an improvement. But we don’t have the frigates or destroyers to form a carrier fleet. So they can only be used in concert with better equipped allies.  We might be short of fighting ships. But we’re not short of admirals. We currently have around 30 rear admirals or above, which works out around four per deployable ship. That’s admirals. Not captains.  None, of course, of this bloated top brass has been held accountable for the near disappearance of our naval power. Nor have any Tory politicians who for 14 years presided over our navy’s degradation. Nor is the current Labour government in any apparent hurry to put matters right. Our airforce and army are in no great shapes either. But it is the state of our non-navy, an integral, vital part of our island history, which is the real national scandal.  And, as is so often the case in modern Britain, nobody is held to account. Nobody forced to carry the can. Nobody making it their mission to put it right. And that is the real national disgrace.

A disgusting paedophile masqueraded as a dog walker so he could film himself raping an elderly dog Luke Wilson, 20, from St Cyrus, Aberdeenshire, sexually attacked a dog he “clicked” with. Wilson admitted carrying out an “utterly despicable” sex attack on a 15-year-old female Staffy cross he was walking for a stranger. Prosecutor David Rogers told the court that in April 2025, Wilson had replied to an online advertisement seeking someone to walk two dogs, Betty and Iffie. On 25 April Wilson arrived at their owner’s address to pick up the dogs and was advised that, due to Iffie’s age, she should not be walked for longer than an hour. When Wilson had not returned with the dogs after two hours, the owner became concerned. At 7pm, Wilson texted the worried woman. The text stated: “I know this is going to sound stupid but is there any chance I can look after Iffie for a day or two as me and her have really clicked.” Thinking this was strange, the owner told Wilson he could not keep the dogs, and offered to fetch them. But Wilson replied that he was going to give Iffie a shower, which alarmed the woman. She travelled to St Cyrus, where she met Wilson with her dogs on the side of a main road. Iffie was soaking wet and shivering, and Betty “looked anxious”, Mr Rogers told the court. When the dogs’ owner returned home, she noticed blood running down Iffie’s hind legs. She was whimpering and crying while attempting to relieve herself. The woman quizzed Wilson, who stated that the dog had “yelped once” while going to urinate and that he thought she had “sat on a stick”. Two days later, Wilson messaged the woman to ask if he could walk the dogs again, but she refused. After examining Iffie, a vet advised the owner to contact the police. On April 29, police executed a search warrant at Wilson’s address, where they found videos and images of Iffie on his phone. The disturbing content was of a sexual nature and extremely violent. During police interview, Wilson admitted to committing various sexual acts on the dog, most of which are too shocking to document. Examination of Wilson’s phone uncovered footage of him with a second, unidentified dog with short dark ginger hair. Officers also found evidence that Wilson had been chatting to what he believed was a 10-year-old girl online, who had sent various child sexual abuse material in exchange for money. There was also a reference made to another charge from 2024 of Wilson being in possession of dozens of indecent images and videos of children. Some of the children featured were toddlers and newborn babies. Police also found videos of bestiality on Wilson’s mobile phone. Wilson pleaded guilty to two counts of having an unnatural connection with a dog and another charge of causing a dog unnecessary suffering. He also admitted possessing indecent images of children and another charge of downloading child abuse material. He also pleaded guilty to one charge of communicating indecently with a child and requesting sexual images. He was sentenced to four-years with half to be served behind bars and half on licence. A six-year sexual harm prevention order was put in place and he was banned from keeping animals for six years.

Heartbroken four-year-old Maisie Willis had her birthday party ruined by two balaclava-wearing teenagers who stole and smashed her beloved egg stall. The little girl from Holbury near Southampton proudly sells eggs from her own chickens on a wooden stand outside her home and doesn’t even keep the money for herself. During her fourth birthday party two lads in balaclavas walked straight into the garden, grabbed the stand, smashed it to pieces and hurled the eggs all over the road. Maisie kept asking her mum “how am I going to sell my eggs now?” while the family tried to comfort her. Her devastated mother Chelsea said: “She works really hard… I can’t understand why two boys would want to destroy everything she has worked for.” The teens have now been tracked down and made to apologise but Maisie remains deeply upset and the family have had to put a simple basket on the doorstep instead. 'We were having her birthday party and these boys ruined it.' They also thanked sympathetic neighbours who gave Maisie extra birthday presents including cards and cash, saying 'it means so much to her to have so many people care'.

This is Robert Richards, an heir of the Chemical billionaire family The DuPont's. He admitted to raping his 3-year-old daughter in 2009. “I feel horrible,” he told the judge, according to court documents. “There’s no excuse for what I’ve done to her.” His lawyer, calling the 6-foot-4, roughly 300-pound Richards “a somewhat gentle person,” argued he “would not fare well” in jail. Hours later, Richards walked away from Delaware Superior Court a free man. He pleaded guilty to a charge of rape in the fourth degree, paid a fine of $4,395 and promised to attend a high-end treatment center in Massachusetts.

Football reporters should never ever, ever, ever use the word ‘disaster’ in relation to giving a goal away. We’ve just marked the Hillsborough tragedy. Check your language. Do much better.
