I created a detailed track and intensity map for Hurricane #MELISSA, displaying categories, date/times, and wind swaths for the storm.
Visible is MELISSA's slow start over the Eastern Caribbean Sea. It was named on the morning of 10/21, and took a few days to organize due to constant wind shear. It became a hurricane on the afternoon of 10/25, and soon underwent rapid intensification, becoming a Category 4 by the morning of 10/26.
MELISSA's intensification was paused temporarily before becoming a Category 5 early on 10/27. The storm fluctuated in intensity as a Category 5 before peaking in intensity around noon on 10/28. It would strike #Jamaica around the same time.
Land interaction with Jamaica severely disrupted MELISSA's core, weakening it to a Category 3 once exiting the island later on 10/28. It fluctuated in intensity once more while moving northeast, becoming a Category 4 briefly, then back to a 3. It made its second landfall in the Santiago de Cuba province with winds of 120 mph.
MELISSA would weaken once more as it exited Cuba, making additional landfalls in The Bahamas as a Category 1 hurricane on 10/29. It restrengthened into a Category 2 further north over the Atlantic, and was last noted passing west of Bermuda as a minimal hurricane.

The highway connecting Baler to Dinadiawan was completed destroyed by surge. Below are before and after images of this highway. In less than 30 hours they have somehow cleared a 1 way path for people finally pass through. Heavy equipment is working nonstop but it could take months to repair.

@StormVisuals This made landfall right where I live! I somewhat wish I was born earlier to have been able to experience this, 2004 was a crazy year for our area. Crazy how no east coast majors since the 04 canes

Hurricane Frances made landfall along the Florida Treasure Coast 21 years ago today. A category two hurricane, Frances, crawled ashore on the Florida east coast beaches, and its broad wind field affected everyone from South Florida up through the Space Coast.
I filmed the entire 36-hour duration of the landfall, which felt like an eternity for it to come on shore and cross the peninsula fully. Most of my filming was on Hutchinson Island between Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce Inlet, with several of my fellow hurricane chasers, including Jim Edds, Jason Foster, and Chris Collura.
Hurricane Frances, along with Charley, Jeanne, and Ivan, was one of four hurricanes to strike Florida during the very active 2004 hurricane season. #hurricanefrances

@CanaanForrest Yeah, the stall really threw the daylight timing off with landfall. There were so many power lines to navigate in the pitch black.

@StormVisuals This was labor day weekend of 2004. I flew down to chase the storm & it stalled offshore before making landfall at night, instead of a daytime landfall. Curfew was in effect & I wasn't crazy enough to chase in the night, so headed back to Dade county from Palm Beach county

@StormVisuals I never thought I would be sick of hearing the wind, but 36 hours was too much.

@StormVisuals Jeff you never cease to amaze me beautiful shot! 👌🏻
