@HanweirGarrison Interesting. So there isn't really a clear CR thing one way or another? Its just "we think it should work this way", same as the new Spiderman stuff

@Dunkatog in the release notes for Throne of Eldraine, there is a card specific note about Hushbringer "An ability that triggers on a card leaving a zone won't trigger if that card is leaving its previous zone because it's entering the battlefield as a creature."

@MBTYuGiOh its insane to me that ygo is like the only mainline TCG aside from OP with good sims. like how has the greater magic playerbase not even considered it

ALERT ALERT 🚨THIS IS NOT A DRILL THE OTS NEAR ME IS STARTING TO RUN MODERN NIGHTS ON A DAY I COULD ACTUALLY GO MTG HOMIES. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO PLAY. I LIKE CONTROL, I LIKE TEMPO, I LIKE SMALL SYNERGIES, I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY A DECK THAT IS NOT IN DANGER OF BEING BANNED

"We have learned our lesson and will not be stepping on any more rakes", says company that wrote multiple articles explaining how they have placed rakes all over their offices and will continue to do so

@SaffronOlive Reasonable comeback mechanisms/not snowbally. Played lots of formats that tick all those boxes, but if you ever fall behind in the first 4 turns the game instantly ends, which is deeply unfun.

Off the top of my head: Diverse (archetype, deck, card) Agency (my decisions in deck building and playing matter) Interactive (interplay of decks rather than two people goldfishing) Evolving (the meta changes over time) Managed (someone is actively steering the ship).

What, in your opinion, makes for a good Magic format? I think sometimes we complain a lot about formats being bad, but I'm not sure we spend enough time talking about what makes a good format.

I just spent 10 minutes at the bar explaining dextro- vs levo- rotary molecules to my friends for some reason. Truly deranged.

@UMBCMegaFan @BoshNRoll Half agree? A lot of thats on WotC. All the training I've ever had emphasized that IDaW and Bribery/Wagering are 0 tolerance things to distance from gambling legally. No idea if thats true, but if its not thats on WotC to make better policy. Not sure I want judges freestyling.

@StormingUp @BoshNRoll I think this is a situation where judge SHOULD HAVE ruled by spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. Pull the players aside, explain why what they did isn’t acceptable, but if both players agreed on the outcome, assigning a GL *feels* over the top.

My greatest criticism of entrenched judges has always been the tendency to drill down so hard on policy you forget that policy exists to help people play a game. This story shows an unconventional tournament shortcut. Ruling IDW shows a serious lack of empathy and creativity.

@Plottdog2213 @BasicMountain The difference is that 40k doesn't have hidden information. Players can't look at their deck to talk it out and "if I draw X I probably win" is a not uncommon discussion point

TWITTER THREAD TWITTER THREAD! Today I want to talk about Competitive YGO. For many players, it can feel hard to improve. For duelists trying to improve, what was the most important lesson you had to learn? I'll begin with an easy one (so you all don't):

Okay, idiots. You all chomped at the bit to say what books you hated or were way more shallow than you thought. Now I'm asking you the obvious followup question - what books ARE profound, important, and life-changing? What have you read that lived up to the hype? I'll start:

TWITTER THREAD TWITTER THREAD! (im fuckin with ya just thought it'd be fun to do one of these that isn't explicitly about yugioh) If I asked you "what is a dumb guy's idea of a profound book," what comes to mind? Obviously, everything on this list, but what else? I'll start:

@MBTYuGiOh I dont understand how people can't grasp "is legal because writing policy otherwise is murky" and "if you do this you're a huge asshole" can both be true.

i do appreciate that the couple of videos we posted have resulted in some more discussion of what’s kosher re:mtg and ygo rules still shocked to see how many mtg players are like “oh yeah it’s an epic mind trick to just fuckin lie to an opponent before the game starts”
PleasantKenobi@PleasantKenobi

Two MTG players sit down for their round at a tournament. They chat; pleasantries and greetings. Player A says what deck they are on. Player B withholds the information politely. They play and it turns out Player A lied what about what deck they are on. Should they be punished?

@BasicMountain This is less easily repeatable than you're thinking. You get to do it exactly one time. Cheating investigation aside, deck problem upgrades on the second warning to game loss anyway. And its not like your opp won't call a judge when this happens.

1) This is insane, easily/repeatably exploitable, clearly a bad outcome setting aside “technically correct” or not. 2) Tournament players don’t get to shape policy but they have to live under the rules, so its reasonable for them to freak out about real examples like this.

Yugioh had Goat and Edison formats. What old standard formats for MTG do you find timeless/would play today just for fun? My favorite by a mile is RTR-M15.
