@EOTierney @PhilipIngMBE @lewis_goodall are surrounded by Cypriot territory ❌ - they're on the coast... and airspace ❌ - air space above both is British... and rely on infrastructure outside the base area ❌ - two way street for both.

@PhilipIngMBE @lewis_goodall Akrotiri and Dhekelia may be 'Sovereign Bases' but are surrounded by Cypriot territory and airspace, and rely on infrastructure outside the base area; moreover, the signals intelligence and long range radar station at Troodos Station on Mount Olympus is on Cypriot territory.

The LVT-4 Buffalos. The 3rd Canadian Division essentially went to war by water. And this wasn’t the first time. The 3rd Division had landed on DDay at Juno Beach, and then assaulted the Breskens Pocket by amphibious assault during Operation Switchback. The Rhineland flooding that the Germans hoped would stop the advance instead became the avenue of attack. Watching the North Shore Regiment, the SD&G Highlanders, and the Regina Rifles all come through in those amphibious carriers tells you a lot about the opening days of Veritable than any map can.

And the aerial imagery. The photographs of flooded Middelaar, Kranenberg, and the road to Cleve give you a sense of just how completely the landscape had been transformed. Miles of inundated fields, drowned vehicles at the roadside, and amphibious traffic where there used to be farmland.

We've just uploaded a major batch of geotagged photographs from Operation Veritable to the Project '44 beta web map. What you're looking at when you scroll through this post are the raw images. But on the map, each one is pinned to the exact location it was taken, tagged with its date, unit, and even some with the names of the soldiers. Here are some things that stood out in the photos: The men of Le Régiment de Maisonneuve at Moyland Castle on the 22nd of February 1945. There's something quietly striking about watching soldiers relax in a Renaissance castle in the middle of a winter campaign: Pte. Gaghe drinking tea out front, Pte. Lefebure fixing comms wire along the castle wall. These the photos that these were real people in a very strange situation.

@The_History_Ex, why does your video on Lt. John R. Fox use a white soldier in the thumbnail? Lt. Fox, MoH, was African-American... from an all-African-American unit, the 366th... So much for "(No AI Documentary)"

Happy 93th birthday Michael Caine. Best British actor ever. Since Zulu (1964) Caine appeared in more than 160 films! Less known is his short military career. In 1951 he joined the Royal Fusiliers and fought in Korea. @themichaelcaine

If anyone else grew up with Barney I’m sorry that you were set up for failure. This obese purple and green monstrosity told everyone that if you just love someone else then they’ll love you too. So if you need someone to blame your problems on today I think we can just crowdsource that to the seven foot tall chicken nugget.

Come with me to walk the Naga Hills in November this year with @SOE_Expeditions It’ll be a blast (but without live munitions you’ll be much safer than the boys of 23 Brigade). It’s the first time anyone has attempted to retrace the activities of the Chindit brigade operating against the Japanese LOC between Kohima and Jessami in 1944.

Step into the storied jungles of Kohima, Naga Hills. This November, walk in the footsteps of the 23 Brigade: where Chindits fought, sacrificed, and built a legacy. Gone but not forgotten RiP Warriors. Join us: soeexpeditions.com #Kohima #WW2History
