@Justnewssportp Why compare GEO and LEO? These are completely different technologies. The real difference is that Starlink does not comply with South Africa’s rules for operating within South Africa directly to the consumer, while Space24 does comply with the rules.

🇮🇶 Iraq has approved @Starlink's operating license to offer high-speed satellite internet services in the country! The agreement, signed between the Iraqi Media and Communications Authority and Starlink, is expected to strengthen internet availability, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure remains limited, while supporting the needs of businesses, educational institutions, and public services. Starlink is expected to launch services soon.

This narrative is breaking down. South Africa is not supporting a slower and more expensive satellite option over Starlink. The comparison is flawed. BrainSAT/Space42 is GEO satellite internet, while Starlink (and Amazon) are LEO. Different technology entirely. Regardless of speed or satellite distance, the core issue is simple: you either comply with South Africa’s rules like everyone else, or you don’t. Elon Musk does not want to comply. That’s the real difference. He wants direct-to-consumer access on his own terms, which isn’t necessarily the best deal for South Africa. We must stop exploiting the plight of rural poor communities as a Trojan horse to open up the entire South African internet market (urban and rural) on Starlink’s preferred terms.

Elon Musk was offered approval if Starlink pretended that a Black frontman ran Starlink South Africa and paid a bribe to dodge the rules. He refused on principle. South Africa’s government enforces racist BEE rules that require 30% Black ownership. Starlink: ~10,700 active satellites, 12M+ customers, and availability across 160+ countries Amazon Leo: 394 satellites, no commercial customers, and no commercial service operating anywhere yet Yet South Africa has created a path for the far smaller, unproven network while keeping the world’s most established satellite internet system out. This is not empowerment. It is regulatory self-sabotage, and South Africans are the ones paying the price.

The South African government rejected a proven, stable @Starlink network of over 10,000 satellites and millions of customers across dozens of countries, to provide you with 390 satellites on a network with ZERO commercial clients that is only due to launch in 2027... maybe. They did this because it is in your best interest in this modern era... because of SeCuRiTy ReAsOnS and stuff... They didn't do this for South Africans at all. They did it for themselves. The way they always do things.

I assume it’s obvious that while the Amazon deal for low-orbit satellite internet is wonderful news, the ownership requirement ICASA insists on (and which contradicts BEE legislation itself) is an obstacle to other investments in the space, and that’s why it needs to be changed. We need lots of players to allow the market to operate efficiently and bring down prices for consumers while improving service. That’s the idea.

The structures never change. Does all this still check out: Herotel is now controlled by Vumatel. Vumatel is a subsidiary of Maziv. Maziv (Level 1 BBBEE) rating is controlled by Community Investment Ventures Holdings. CIVH is part of the investment portfolio of Remgro. Remgro is the investment holding company chaired by Johann Rupert. Ultimately, locking competitors out means another monopoly for these guys in telecoms.
