Spain's data protection authority fined Yoti €950,000 for breaching GDPR rules with its digital ID app. The main issues were: - Collecting and using biometric data (such as selfies) without a valid legal basis (€500,000 fine) - Obtaining invalid consent from users (€200,000 fine) - Retaining personal data far too long, including five years of location records (€250,000 fine)

💯 OS age verification law: "You no longer own your computer". It violates the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments. No OS has to comply - "any law repugnant to the Constitution is null and void". Developers who do deserve class-action lawsuits.
It's FOSS@Itsfoss

I find it frustrating that none of these "guardians" of Linux and open source have reacted to the OS-level age verification law: - Linux Foundation - Open Source Initiative - Free Software Foundation - Software Freedom Conservancy

A quick update on the infamous EU “ChatControl” 🇪🇺 What a turn of events in EU tech policy: from potential mandatory mass scanning of data (“ChatControl”) → to even voluntary scans losing their legal basis (for now). Just months ago, fears were growing around mandatory scanning of private communications in the EU (incl. pictures and videos). Now, talks between the EU Council (Member States) and the European Parliament have collapsed - and the result is a complete reversal. As of April 3, even voluntary scanning of data by platforms loses its legal basis under EU privacy (ePrivacy & GDPR) rules, as the temporary exemption was not extended. A striking example of how fast EU tech policy can turn - and a big win for European privacy advocates.

A smoother on-ramp matters. In this demo, the team shows how @openfort_hq powers biometric login in @Streamr_App, making it easier to onboard both Web2 and Web3 users without the usual friction. Big shoutout to Openfort for the tech here. Very clean integration.

Italy’s "Piracy Shield" forces providers to block content in under 30 minutes without judicial oversight, which leads to overblocking (taking down legitimate websites alongside infringing ones). We're appealing a €14M fine to protect the Internet from automated censorship and ensure infrastructure providers aren't forced to overblock. cfl.re/4cMh0WA

Fantastic news in the UK today - the government has apparently ditched its plan to force creatives to 'opt out' if they don't want AI companies training on their life's work. The opt-out proposal was unfair and unworkable. Many couldn't realistically have opted out at all, and it would have affected small rights holders disproportionately negatively. We should be grateful to the government for listening to reason on this, rather than just listening to the big tech lobby. They have done the right thing by putting opt-out behind us. They should now reaffirm what the law says - that AI companies must license people's work if they want to train on it - and commit not to change that law. thetimes.com/uk/technology-…

Brazil's Age Verification law goes into full effect in less than 12 hours (Mar 17th). This law says that all Operating Systems, in use in Brazil, must do age verification for all user accounts... or face $9.5 Million (USD) in fines per violation. The government of Brazil has stated that they are "monitoring" several companies and systems for compliance, including Canonical (Ubuntu Linux) and IBM (Red Hat & Fedora Linux) as well as Epic Games and Valve (Steam).

Brazil Law: All OS's Have 13 Days to Add Age Verification A new law, in Brazil, requires age verification on all Operating Systems (including Linux & Windows) by March 17th. Plus a rundown on similar laws in California, Colorado, and New York.
