Does the Alia Bhatt + KJo career template impact Bollywood in the long run?: An opinion thread Recent discussions on X got me questioning whether Alia Bhatt’s and Karan Johar’s casting and box office PR tactics are actually healthy for Bollywood in general.🧵#Jigra 1/11
taran adarsh@taran_adarsh

#Jigra opens to lower-than-expected numbers, with a significant contribution from urban centres dominating the Day 1 biz, thanks to the star-power [#AliaBhatt]. As anticipated, the response from mass pockets is ordinary/lukewarm... An energetic start in the #Hindi heartland would've bolstered the opening day performance. Looking ahead, the #Dussehra holiday today [Saturday] should help offset the initial shortfall... Sunday is also expected to provide a much-needed boost to the numbers. Monday, however, will offer a clearer picture of how well the film sustains, particularly in urban centres. [Week 1] Fri ₹ 4.55 cr. #India biz. Nett BOC. #Boxoffice

@Main_Khamakha Alia + KJo together are actually in a position of power over most Indian writers/directors, to the extent that films only get funded if she’s cast. Her contemporaries like Kriti/Tripti don’t have this luxury. In any case, all criticism can’t be dismissed as misogyny. Also:

@StriderEl Come on now kriti is only as good an actress as alia is. Tripti I can understand but Kriti gets a lot of opportunities as of currently.

Misogyny affects all Indian actresses, not Alia alone. The pushback against her is she’s a nepokid with limited range who inserts herself in most A-list films at the cost of opportunities for better actresses. Nobody would’ve outraged against Kriti or Tripti, who are women too.

the movie hasn't even released and everyone's dismissing it because alia has joined the cast. like everyone's misogyny jumped out.

@deen_john If the film’s cost itself is more than 100 crore, earning 100 crore at box office will not recover its budget. It’s plain math.

@RajeshPateLigma @Noahpinion @StriderEl It’s an economic classification because Pakistan’s economy is particularly sensitive to economic developments in MENA. Pakistanis didn’t lobby for a cultural reclassification that the world bank “obliged.”

@Noahpinion There’s a difference: World Bank created an economic classification called MENAAP, which includes MENA, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It didn’t add Pakistan to MENA. Arbitrary classifications can’t change geographic realities.
iman ☽@imankhaneh

the world bank didn’t change middle east’s definition. the new term is for economic purpose to make it easier for themselves n it’s called menaap (middle east, north africa, afghanistan and pakistan). not mena. not middle east. south asia is still what it was, same goes for mena.
