Incidentally, as one of the only faculty members in America apparently currently in possession of a functional institutional-variant Canvas website, it feels like I missed the apocalypse. Small mammal when the asteroid hit vibes etc. etc. .

I have returned to blue book exams, and my main issue is how to deal with the students' horrific handwriting.

🚨 University professors have been saying AI is completely destroying learning and that we'll soon have an AI-powered, semi-illiterate workforce. Here's a glimpse into the educational apocalypse: "Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. (...) After getting acquainted with the chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, and a “hippie farming class” called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. Why wouldn’t she? Rarely did she sit in class and not see other students’ laptops open to ChatGPT. Toward the end of the semester, she began to think she might be dependent on the website. She already considered herself addicted to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Reddit, where she writes under the username maybeimnotsmart. “I spend so much time on TikTok,” she said. “Hours and hours, until my eyes start hurting, which makes it hard to plan and do my schoolwork. With ChatGPT, I can write an essay in two hours that normally takes 12.” - "By November, Williams estimated that at least half of his students were using AI to write their papers. Attempts at accountability were pointless. Williams had no faith in AI detectors, and the professor teaching the class instructed him not to fail individual papers, even the clearly AI-smoothed ones. “Every time I brought it up with the professor, I got the sense he was underestimating the power of ChatGPT, and the departmental stance was, ‘Well, it’s a slippery slope, and we can’t really prove they’re using AI,’” Williams said. “I was told to grade based on what the essay would’ve gotten if it were a ‘true attempt at a paper.’ So I was grading people on their ability to use ChatGPT.” - AI in education is a serious topic, and many schools and universities are blindly jumping into the "AI-first" wave without considering short and long-term consequences. It would be great to hear more from teachers and educators to understand potential solutions. This might be a great opportunity for rethinking the education system and how students are assessed. - 👉 Link to the full article below. 👉 To learn more about AI's legal and ethical challenges, join my newsletter's 94,700+ subscribers (link below).

@maya_sen I had to institute no-devices-while-using-restroom-during-test because some ss claimed to feel unwell and used AI on their phone in the bathroom and wrote them down and snuck them into their notes, which they are allowed.

I have been experimenting with in-class essays but - hard to handle open-note policies when most students now take notes digitally - AI glasses/wearables are coming - some handwriting is truly illegible - short handwritten essays test different skills than long form essays
Adam Zivo@AdamZivo

I find this discourse perplexing because the solution seems straigthforward: make university marks almost entirely dependent on lengthy in-person exams that combine handwritten essays with oral questioning. Why is this even a conversation? Are there implementation barriers or something?

@cblatts @dilanesper AI is really good at deciphering bad handwriting. Scan them all in, and convert to text.

@a_n_a_berg Just require that papers be handwritten. If some students still insist on copying out an AI-generated essay in long hand, at least they have to suffer the grind.

I worry that this is massive cope on the side of teachers. It’s one thing to say, in-class writing is the best we can ask for in the age of AI, but to declare that we’ve "revived student writing" and ignore the enormous loss—*1000s* of hours of writing—is myopic and disastrous
Dana Goldstein@DanaGoldstein

With student A.I. use/abuse now ubiquitous, professors and teachers are killing off take-home essays and papers. Students are writing inside the classroom, often by hand. It's part of the big rethink happening on tech and learning. My new report here: nytimes.com/2026/04/30/us/…

@StriderTricker @aliciaandrz Another huge problem is tech corps insert ai into all our devices that repeatedly offer to 'help' us write. We need to stop profit makers doing this to us. I have to 'fight' tech to make it useful, but not everyone is as tech savvy 😢

@aliciaandrz I will say that dealing with it calmly and individually usually works but I have also become much more restrictive in my instruction again - no take home tests etc, but I am in Bio so it’s a bit easier to do that.

@TheNerdyCatLady Living in wildfire country: better safe than sorry. Fires can move so quickly and it’s always dangerous mayhem when everyone is evacuating at the same time.

I dunno if I did the right thing or should have waited, the cats (& my son & I) are so stressed. We weren't exactly under mandatory or voluntary evacuation, but those were on 3 sides of us & I was scared it would take a long time packing up the cats & all.

sometimes I can’t believe I taught my first college class at 22, with barely any guidance on how to do so. & it was freshman composition—the most difficult class to teach. we really just throw professors into the fire & tell them to figure it out.

My dad is 75 and lives in Iowa. He got the MLB Extra Innings package to watch the Tigers again this year - something he plans his whole day around. Tonight, Detroit (664 miles from his house) hosted Milwaukee (360 miles from his house). Couldn't watch. Blacked out. (1/2)

@ByEricPratt I live 250 miles away from the SF Giants and 190 miles away from the A’s. I had to buy season subscriptions for both because they are carried by 2 different local stations and still a Giants game was blacked out for some reason. It’s a total racket.

Thoughts re: Kaitlyn Chen’s chances of making GSV’s roster🧵 As currently constructed, the Valkyries roster is disproportionately wing-heavy. Even some of the players listed as guards project to be used as wings at the next level. That leaves the team relatively thin at PG & C…
