Jeanne Gang on architecture as ‘a catalytic force’ for sustainability Architect Jeanne Gang addressed the crucial role of architecture in sustainability during a discussion with Sarah Billington @Stanford, highlighting that the built environment contributes to at least 30% of global annual carbon emissions. These emissions primarily come from fossil fuels used in producing building materials like cement and steel, as well as heating and cooling buildings. “The way we build is key to zero carbon,” Gang asserted. Gang, whose firm @StudioGang has been selected to design Stanford's Sustainability Commons, emphasizes two key strategies for sustainable architecture. First, she advocates increasing urban density to reduce carbon emissions by creating more walkable communities that reduce car dependency. Second, she promotes "grafting" –renovating and expanding existing buildings rather than building new ones, as demonstrated in her firm's work on the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. The #Stanford Sustainability Commons project will align with the university's environmental goals, including achieving zero waste by 2030 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Gang expressed concern about young environmentally conscious architects avoiding the field due to its environmental impact, noting that innovative architects are needed to meet future building needs while addressing sustainability challenges.
