It was ALMOST April fools on us on April 1, 1984—we were at Three Rivers Stadium on a glorious spring day to see the Maulers get their first home W, 28-14 over hated Oakland, who’s “Invaders” moniker wasn’t at all inspired by their old NFL team. Yet, for years we had regretted not being at the Igloo instead. At the exact same time, what we believed for many years in retrospect was one of the most important sporting events ever held in the city of Pittsburgh was taking place cross-town at the Igloo. The Penguins hosted the New York Islanders in the final game of the regular season, and we had always thought they needed to squeak out a loss to clinch the #1 pick in the upcoming NHL draft, the fate of the franchise literally hanging in the balance of that game. Turns out though that the Penguins had already clinched the Mario Lemieux sweepstakes a few days prior with a loss at the Rangers. Head coach Lou Angotti’s squad still managed a 4-3 loss to make the “win” over New Jersey a bit more convincing! Only 6000 fans showed up to witness the last appearance of those great early ‘80s gold jerseys, worn exclusively for the entire season at home that year. The 20000+ fans at Three Rivers, including ourselves who got to see a game from a “superbox” (that’s what we called them) for the only time ever, saw the best game in Maulers history! It was WR Jackie Flowers’ day in his debut, 5 receptions for 140 yards and a TD! Maulers highlights: youtu.be/_GUEv3x23xM?si… Pens highlights: youtu.be/6DGANSQQUSY?si…

Continuing the Debate: With the new Falcons uniforms being revealed tomorrow and it is assumed the modern logo will continue to be their primary in some form, which logo is actually better? People seem to think the simplicity of the original that was designed by accomplished sports artist and Illustrator, Wayland Moore is to simplistic, but to me the is part of the charm. Logos don't need to be overly busy or detailed to be effective. By the way the "modern" Falcons logo has been around for 23 years.

Former University of Texas AD Steve Patterson once argued that individual athletes don’t create the value in college sports. The university brand does. He essentially claimed fans pay for the front of the jersey, not the player. He was fired after less than 2-years on the job

This year, college students who participate in NCAA sports will haul in over: — $4 BILLION in scholarships — $1 BILLION in rev-share cash — $1 BILLION in NIL (which really isn't NIL) Yet somehow, some folks still believe certain athletes are actually being "exploited" OK...

If you are one of the few who continue to claim college sports are not broken—solely because TV ratings are supposedly up—despite the mountain of evidence in front of you, then you are either: a) benefiting financially from the chaos b) simply don't care about anything other than the Power 4 c) both (the correct answer is c)

Jon Scheyer will not be dodging the “NCAA Tournament Choker” narrative for a while. - Blown 9-point lead against NC State in 2024 Elite Eight - Blown 14-point lead against Houston in the 2025 Final Four - Blown 19-point lead against UConn in the 2026 Elite 8 It might not be fair, but it’s going to be loud until they win the whole thing.

Speaking of which, March 29 is actually one of the most important dates in Pittsburgh sports history. On this date in 1984, the Penguins clinched the first overall pick in the NHL draft by losing to the Rangers 6-4 in New York, thereby winning the Mario Lemieux sweepstakes. Did GM Eddie Johnston and HC Lou Angotti tank? TSN Canada seems to think so. They sure seem salty about it that’s for sure. Here’s a link to a super-interesting video asking EJ and Lou the tanking question. Our take—the great EJ and Coach Lou are both local heroes! youtu.be/i-CRnk6fH0c?si…

This article from June 20, 1984 hangs in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ press box. I chuckle every time I walk past it, knowing what we know now. In hindsight, the title of this article can be considered the understatement of the century. @MarioLemieuxFdn @TomMcMillan63 #LetsGoPens
