I was thinking today that the term “non-coding DNA” is a misnomer. If one uses the analogy of a software package, the protein-coding regions are closer to asset packs, like image templates used throughout the application. The “non-coding” regions would be where the software lies. The protein-coding regions determine the creation of protein chains from amino acids, like building images from pixels or sounds from samples. These protein “assets” are reused throughout the biological software execution, similarly to sprites, textures, meshes, etc., in applications. These assets are the building blocks to the user interface (i.e. the appearance and functionality at the organism level). Research shows that the “non-coding” regions handle: * Conditional logic (enhancers, silencers, promoters, etc.) * Scheduling (timing, coordination, responses, etc.) * Organization (composition, layout, etc.) * Run-time hooks (regulation, dependency injection, etc.) There are even regions on the DNA containing legacy software and code that has been “commented out” (i.e. not executed). The chromosomes themselves would be akin to the organism’s infrastructure: an operating system with advanced modularity, parallel logic support, and connectivity with other services. Regions of the chromosomes serve as file markers, bus arbitration logic, and memory protection. All of this combines to only 2 meters of software code per cell! Since every single cell in your body is running the most advanced and densely-coded software known to existence, you are a walking data center containing trillions of individual computers that can run on just 2000 kcal of energy per day!
