Smoking is cool, it has always been cool and will always be cool. You shouldn't smoke because it's absolutely horrible for you. It's why we all quit, but it doesn't change the fact that it's cool. They let me sit with them and drew all over my shirt. Nicest bands I ever met. Still have that shirt, still covered in blood and gore.

Lemme tell ya how Dave saved ATR early in our career. In the fall of 2004, we were on tour with GWAR. It was the first real tour we'd ever done, and every night was packed. Even as the opening act, we were playing to a full house. Halfway through the tour, Oli's wife gave him an ultimatum. She'd quit her job, told him he had to come home, and threatened to leave him if he didn't drop off the tour. Oli felt horrible. "She's my wife," he said. "I have to go." That same night, after the show, Dave Brockie pulled him aside. And understand: Dave was the lead singer of the headlining band. We were a nobody band from Massachusetts. Who were we? But Dave took Oli out with a bottle of whiskey and a joint, and they talked until bus call. When Oli came back, he was a different man. "Fuck her. This is my life's dream. She knew that when she married me. If she wants to leave, she can leave. But I'm not leaving this tour, and I'm not quitting the band." Dave had told Oli something that really hit home. He said, “if you do this, she will push you around for the rest of your life.” He was right. I’m forever grateful for that Gwar tour. For what it did for All That Remains. but more importantly what it did for my friend Oli. Thanks, Dave. Miss and love you, man.

I am a scientist. Most of the people I work with are nerds. Many of my close friends are too. We’ve all had the discussions about Star Trek, who is the best captain, which series captures the true essence of the techno-optimism , etc etc… no one I know has seen this show. It’s not a left right thing either, they just tried to use the Skinsuit to attract a new “modern” audience. Which never seems to show up. It’s just so strange so many brands do this. I think it’s an excellent reflection on our society’s collective narcissism. Ham fisted and cheesy as the older series were, they at least discussed big ideas. What is the purpose of law? What does it mean to be living? What would a society driven by this or that vice or virtue look like? Those big ideas are replaced by the personal. What does it mean to be a minority in a majority setting? What does it mean to be a gay alien? Blah blah blah. It’s the same story told over and over. They’re not asking what would a warrior culture look like, they’re just making the warrior gay and lame.

Upsetting news to hear #StarTrek Starfleet Academy will not go past Season 2. The fandom's inability to embrace any new storytelling outside of nostalgia might as well be the death knell for the fandom.

@JWhitebread1 @Stormcrow_JE Same with Rocky building the wall out of different materials to find out which one Grace can see through. They don’t explain why it’s a small window before Rocky sends him away to build an entire transparent wall. Fun Easter egg if you read the book.

Project Hail Mary is an exceptional film. Great adaptation of the novel. Go see it. Anything I could criticize about it would be nitpicking. ... BUT HEY! THAT'S WHAT THE INTERNET IS FOR! SO LET'S DO THIS! NITPICKS AWAY! If you loved the parts of the novel of where Grace "sciences" his way out of problems, a hallmark of Weir's writing, you aren't going to get much of that out of this film. They chose instead to focus on the relationship between Rocky and Grace, which was the right call. It's mostly a story about a man finding his courage through an unlikely friendship. Still, there are hints to those problem-solving scenes in the movie. One of my favorites is near the end of the novel where Grace uses the spin-drives on the Hail Mary as an improvised IR LiDAR to find Rocky's disabled ship. If you look at the displays, you can tell that's what he's doing, but they never explain it, it's more of an Easter Egg to fans of the book to let us know, hey, we love that part of the book too. Still, the movie has a LOT of musical montages, and long cinematic scenes where nothing much happens other than gorgeous visuals. They are beautiful, but, they could have cut a few minutes of those and put a LITTLE more of the science into the movie, I think. Overall, very great film though, great performances, great sets and visuals and really heart-warming.
