Tales of the Zoomer: Hired a 20 something to work at my retail store, show up tomorrow at 10am for training. She posted on Facebook about how awesome it would be to work at my place, she finally got a job, she was going out that very night to celebrate! Later, posted photos of her drinking it up and dancing on a table with friends. Called me 2 hours after she was supposed to show, at noon. In tears. Somehow, magically overslept! The dog ate her alarm clock! Could she please keep her job? This was a one time thing! Then, more menacing: you people are all alike! I need this job! I hate your guts! Then, a post on Facebook about how horrible my place was, and what a rotten person I was for firing her.

@GSteel1984 @VerumEstLiberta @FilmLadd Plus we didn't have nearly as comprehensive (let alone analyzable) medical data... so all DSM considerations aside it still would've been hella hard to really know what we were dealing with The way it was somehow even more stigmatized in prior eras also would mask a lot of it

@StyrlingDB @FilmLadd I was a Maint. Sup at a Resort, the Owner said a lot of the same things you did in 2 years He sold out to a management company that brought in a Manger, who gave everyone a raise, and refused to pay less then a good wage, no matter what, never had a problem with staffing

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd The "lie flat" movement I think has a lot in common... and ironically is based in the same place that our own economic grinder depends upon to keep up its consumption indefinitely Are either of those outlooks good? Perchance not... but they are reactions to toxic environments

@StyrlingDB @FilmLadd So you value your face more then 10 dollars I fully respect that, Basic logic we all understand, what value we put on ourselves Gen Z, is simply not seeing the value in selling themselves cheap It's a personal choice

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd There we go 😆 And thanks to this tweet #TIL that that chain was actually established that far back (1959 with the modern name +/- earlier franchise drama). The more you know! 🤔

@bigdumbchops @FilmLadd Well... when they're the center of their own world they -are- the big picture (at least as far as they're concerned) 🙄 Thus every perceived slight is clearly massively personal and inexcusable... and any attempts to move the camera off of them provoke juvenile tantrum behavior

@HattoriPonzo @FilmLadd I salute (at the least) your willingness to work with some who haven't figured things out yet... the gratification of helping someone genuinely improve is hard to beat and it uplifts the community as you say It's a risk but it's one too few are willing to take even in good cases

@FilmLadd Its a hard choice to take a fuckup and make them understand why theyre a fuckup. Ive tried with many kids and it’s usually a waste of my time, but ive helped a few turn it around and thats pretty worthwhile I hope that dummy learned a lesson from you, but probably not

@GodsConduit @LiquidBrolaire @FilmLadd Same 😆 Honestly it's just the same old song and dance from them about whoever the latest generation to join the workforce is at the time Y'know... the ones who more often haven't yet learned how to recognize their garbage a mile away and avoid it like the plague

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd And that latter situation won't see you having that much and still living anywhere people are happy to live (try an apartment in rougher parts of town e.g.) As opposed to the white-picket-fence Levittown dream of yesteryear--yet for plenty back then it also wasn't merely a dream

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd My sympathies for your TBI... those are tough business There's something to be said for the integrity of not wanting to just perpetuate a toxic work culture and feel a corporate-owned cog in the machine We need better alternatives but something big will have to give to get them

@FilmLadd @StyrlingDB I used to work with Gen Z, before I got my skull broken, and they see it differently They feel they are better off not working then letting someone exploit them It's a totally different mindset too many modern jobs pay so little it's not worth the effort to them, to do them

@FilmLadd @StyrlingDB Maybe if you had a culinary degree, and worked for Gordan Ramsey, but you are not making that working for say Cracker Barrel, or Red Lobster But Boomers were making that working for the likes of Burger King

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd Very valid point here. The "breadwinner" and "housewife" duality lasted a long time. It was expected that the latter would help the former decompress and have peace at home for the sake of recovery. But when one income is often not enough to support even oneself anymore...

@StyrlingDB @FilmLadd It's a cultural shift as well, a Boomer by 20 was expected to be married/family This put a lot of demand on the man, this meant the employer could own them, treat them like trash, and they would still show up, because they needed that money Gen Z is not playing that game

@0220Mamacita @FilmLadd I think there's something to be said for this. It takes guts to be vulnerable and take a chance on people (especially with money)... but it's a very human thing to do And the world needs a lot more humans being humane to one another if it's to get better any time soon 👍

@RJtheCableGuy @FilmLadd I should wonder how well that can be/has been demonstrated... with the heterogeneity in how homeschoolers can go about what they do I have to wonder if assessment methods will necessarily have sampling/reporting bias in addition to difficulties with consistent metrics 🤔

@StyrlingDB @FilmLadd Right, of course. On average, though, I think homeschooling produces better results than public or even private schools, for a variety of reasons that are readily available to look up online 😁

@DwarvenConstit1 @FilmLadd Certainly advanced jobs exist that can provide that much and more (I presume we both think that a given) But they generally won't be anyone's first/fast-food job and neither will they be ones from a lot of small business owners with the mindsets on display in this fracas 😒

@FilmLadd @StyrlingDB No they could not The pay is simply put, Not there these days They would need to be making around $25/hour to match what Boomers were making for the same min wage, and let's be real, no one is putting that on the table, no matter how respectful they are about their job

@RJtheCableGuy @FilmLadd I can see it! There are certainly some who have done a poor job doing something that is nominally "homeschooling" but ultimately disadvantaged their kids. And there are also those who have done great and really set their kids ahead in life in a lot of ways. And all in between.

@StyrlingDB @FilmLadd I think a lot of homeschooling parents have a hard-working mindset that they pass on to their children - Homeschooling is not an easy endeavor to undertake (though it can be easier than some may think) but for most parents who do, it's worth it.
