Implanted Brain-Computer Interfaces are getting fast! They're approaching speeds that match unimpaired people typing. But... more electrodes won't be enough to break through the "motor barrier."

To everyone talking about how improved the timeline is: Were you just... rawdogging The Feed this *entire* time? No wonder y'all are so upset. That's the information diet equivalent of radioactive waste bagels.

@SumnerLN @PhysMedParis Curious what you think of ultrasound as a consumer grade wearable BCI, with all its constraints dictating the headset form factor

"Positive, neutral, and negative posts accounted for 48.69%, 38.23%, and 13.08% of the analytic corpus, respectively, and Mann–Kendall trend tests indicated that overall sentiment became more positive over time" Fascinating.

I had a similar experience for a long time (incl. post-Elon). I felt like the holdout claiming Science Twitter was still alive. Then, like a light switch, my For You became unusable. It's been nuked for 1-2 years now. To remedy, I started following more people, e.g. my follow-list's retweets. Glad to hear there's still hope!

I don't know what's different about me but… I have never had a bad feed, nor perceived any big change in quality. Not when Elon took over, not today when they changed the algo, never. It's just always been pretty good. I don't use Following either. I'm always on For You! I like the algorithmic feed, it helps me discover good stuff from people I'm not following. I don't know how I got this lucky. I do curate my feed very carefully though. Anyway, I'm glad y'all are enjoying this place better now.

@jessfraz THIS. I’ve never experienced as large of a before/after delta from *any* other drug as I did when I was in the hospital with poisoning and got IV Zofran. It felt like a miracle.

Zofran is one of those miracle drugs where you can go from about to throw up from nausea to feeling perfectly fine in under a minute, honestly can’t think of another drug that’s as effective as quickly Science is cool

Given the temperature around AGI, I suspect we’ll start to see more concrete calls to action re safety, governance, and oversight from the frontier labs. “The rapid progress we’re seeing in AI requires a new approach to testing frontier AI model capabilities […]. The US […] could establish a new Standards Body modelled on a federally overseen public-private partnership or self-regulatory organisation, much like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), with a board that includes independent leading technical experts and open-source representatives.“

Hundreds of deeptech VCs were asked: which two funds are most helpful to founders? @fiftyyears ranked in the top tier 🥹 No compliment means more to us than "helpful to founders." We'd take it over anything -- smart, great returns, even good looking.

@SamoBurja While true that *most* rely on electrical signals, some of the most exciting BCIs under development do not :)

What unites all of these devices into a single field is that they all rely on interpreting the complex electrical signals of the human brain and nervous system. This is a field that has perhaps surprisingly barely applied the scale of machine learning to its challenges.

AI is driving progress in reading the electrical signals of the brain. Brain-computer interfaces have not even reaped low-hanging fruit from scaling yet. They promise to control machines with our minds, cure blindness, and more. Read the new @bismarckanlys Brief (link below):
