Can ultrasound make you smell things that aren’t there?
Turns out, yes! We reliably triggered distinct scents like a campfire burn or a garbage truck by targeting our brains with ultrasound. To our knowledge, this has never been done before, even in animals.

There was this time when we saw a paper about making skin transparent in mice, and tried to get it to work on ourselves
We made the gel from the paper and were rubbing it in for half an hour, but unfortunately, to this day, our skin remains embarrassingly opaque

Me too!
We actually shared our images with an endovascular neurosurgeon at UCSF and he was in disbelief.
After we got over that, he told me how exciting this would be for all the different applications in stroke localization and vascular assessment.

but fair ofc! the microbubbles are super safe, the ultrasound output was kept below the limits, and the end product won't even use the bubbles at all

"Ultrasound can't look through bone or air." This is not true. Here's a video from Guasch et al 2020 simulating ultrasound propagation through the skull. There's also a whole field that sends ultrasound through the skull for neurostimulation (see @nudge). (1/4)

At some point, we didn't have heating in the office, so Raffi calculated the heat dissipation of the space, converted it to the number of electrical space heaters needed, and founder-moded us 30 space heaters from Home Depot

early this year, i came to san francisco to visit some friends.
i wrote a tracking algorithm for some microbubbles they'd injected into themselves (yes, really).
we ended up with some of the most beautiful images of the brain i've ever seen.
