@aeroweanie @aviationarchive It actually flew with multiple supersonic prop designs. The nice thing being it could take off and land on jet power, so as not to make people on the ground sick from the SS prop noise.

The XF-84H Thunderscreech (with real Audio samples) first flew on July 22, 1955, a turboprop experiment from the F-84F Thunderstreak with a 5,850-hp Allison engine driving a 12-ft prop whose tips hit Mach 1.18 and created continuous sonic booms. It hit 520 mph in tests, could scream audible 25 miles away, and made ground crews nauseous or worse, but only 12 flights happened with 11 emergency landings before cancellation in 1956.👀

Now in our technical discussion we have almost solely focused on the aircraft and EM Theory. We have made allusions to the pilots but never fully expanded upon that or the context that dogfighting (BFM) exists in or any kind of utility value.

@TheRubenSaurus @GavRov Love the Medallion paint. There’s a lot of paints I really like. Now I just need them to release 4.7 so I can set up my cousins joysticks and fly it.

@Daniel15305815 Also, two points. Hillside made the F-16 multi role, because he didn’t want it to end up like the F-104 in USAF service. Also, the AGILE FALCON was designed to restore the turn performance, but didn’t proceed.

In our last segment we spoke a little about energy maneuverability theory and John Boyd. Now we need to look at the F-16 and F-18 and how they approach the overall maneuverability problem in different ways.

@TomcatJunkie @heatloss1986 I actually prefer the preproduction prototypes of the F-111Bs, that had the medium length nose, but I did like the short nose as well.

I’m going to catch hell from certain folks on this… but I think the short-nose F-111B was the best-looking F-111. Plus it could land on the boat, which just makes a jet cooler by default.

A piece of artwork – from a collection of Grumman art – depicting the failed US Navy F-111B. The F-111B was primarily a General Dynamics design but Grumman was an important contractor, so this may be Grumman art.

@Daniel15305815 Also, as a side note to what you mentioned, IIRC, the YF-17 was very stable up to 7g’s, in terms of being able to aim the gun without the nose wandering around due to it’s alpha capability.

However we have to remember that pilots get a vote and what is true on paper is not necessarily true in practice. But I am going to leave that for the next thread and the next evolution of EM theory.

The F-16 has better turn rates across the board and can access a high speed flight envelope that the F/A-18 cannot; and even a higher G-limit on the F/A-18 would still not result change the relative energy efficiency of each airframe.

@Daniel15305815 An interesting point about the YF-17 is that they used differential area ruling on it to optimize its turn performance at M=1.2. I.e, the top of the aircraft was area ruled for a higher Mach number than the bottom.

Northrop on the other hand took a more conservative approach towards instability and instead designed an airplane that is perhaps not as aerodynamically exceptional...but one that is capable of easily flying through its entire envelope.

Regardless the plane that ended up on the other end was still an exceptional in EM metrics; even if it didn't meet Boyd's standards. The YF-17 also went through a similar process when it was adopted by the US Navy and was probably "compromised" to a greater extent.

@emilys_game Aurora Mk.2 Modules. (The rear fuselage). The left one is the cargo/courier module, you can see the slot for boxes in the bottom middle and the one one the right is just fuel for the fighter variant IMHO. The end you see is where it interfaces with the forward fuselage.

@TheRubenSaurus That's what I liked about the original Tomb Raider games. I don't mind the PvE, now that I can get some cool loot off the gangs, I don't mind PvP (Although, I do avoid it, so you'll probably never see me at Hathor). So, yes, I agree with you.

FPS is a massive part of the Star Citizen universe, but I agree that it doesn't need to be everywhere all the time. I don't always want to have to fight for everything with guns. Games can still be interesting without fighting, solving puzzles and mysteries etc. What do you think about this? #StarCitizen
