@jmechner Jordan, I remember seeing all of this stuff on an episode of Icons on G4 like 20 years ago. It was definitely one of the things I can point to that fueled the already growing desire for game development when I was younger. Thank you sir.

Thanks! For those interested, my original rotoscoping videos and other behind-the-scenes materials from making Prince of Persia can be found on my website at #pop" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">jordanmechner.com/en/library/#pop

A behind the scenes look at the making of the 1989 video game "Prince of Persia". Designer Jordan Mechner used rotoscoping to animate the movements of the game's characters, tracing video footage of his younger brother running and jumping (as well as video from old Errol Flynn films).

counterintuitive thing about art: clarity is confusing when a game does something genuinely groundbreaking, and does it as clearly and directly as possible with no obfuscation, people outside the target audience find it incredibly baffling. with no fluff and no compromises, there’s nothing at all to latch onto if you aren’t able to see the vision. if you aren’t in the target audience, it can be very hard to imagine how there could possibly be a point. this is why it’s always the very best games that bring out the very worst takes. Joseph Anderson’s video on The Witness, after a series of confused grievances, reaches a hilarious climax where he reveals his central theory: “Jonathan Blow is fucking with us”. this is a plainly absurd assumption to make about a 7-year multi-million dollar project, but it sounds even more absurd to those of us who understand The Witness because it, like all the greatest works of art, is exceptionally clear, because it HAS to be exceptionally clear in order to convey something so subtle and so fragile (which is what makes it a great work). this doesn't mean the game is easy to understand; it just means it couldn't be made any easier. Joseph was not in the target audience and was in denial about it. this placed him in an awkward position, forced to make up a story for why the game is the way it is. meanwhile the game, masterpiece that it is, leaves no room for halfway-accurate answers. the only way to make sense of the game’s intricate construction is to see something like the real animating vision. hence “Jonathan Blow is fucking with us”—secretly the highest possible praise he could have given the game!

Vibe coding is crazy man. Met a 12yr old making $600k a month with his vibe-coded SaaS he started 4 months ago. I asked how he built so fast. He said he just made a design-doc in GPT and fed it to Cursor with Sonnet-4 and it worked first try. His goal is to get to $2M a month this year. Running everything under his Moms Stripe account. His firebase got hacked and sensitive user information got leaked. Got arrested and being tried as an adult but the SaaS is still printing though. None of this happened btw.

WWII story: When Nazis invaded Copenhagen, chemist George de Hevesy dissolved two Nobel Prize gold medals in acid rather than let them be stolen. The orange solution sat unnoticed on a lab shelf throughout the occupation. After the war, he recovered the gold & the medals were reminted. 🏅

@TouchGameplay I just realized the description says, 'from Chris Fletcher'. Chris is my brother who is also a developer and did release games on iOS, however he did not make this game. So, not sure.

@rfleury @zack_overflow Having something like read-hooks or write-hooks would be cool, that would call code whenever you read to/write from the variable, and then you can just assert inside of that. That way you also don't have to call getters/setters.

I miss the good old days when we wrote simple C programs using the dead simple CGI API. No frameworks were required. Just ~100 lines of C code to implement your own server. No dependencies. Your whole website/server recompiled in ~1 second.
