@Adam_Grant_Bell To do that I think you'd have to regulate to change the profit motives created by high tech advertising. Having advertisers & ad platforms incentives so at odds with every day users is always going to result in an absolute disaster for users.

As a policy professional reading this, it occurs that the best way of managing this issue isn't to regulate speech, but instead to regulate how algorithms direct attention. Leave the racists in their walled off cesspits, but don't direct people to them.

Five days ago we began a family game of Risk. It ended tonight. It feels like it’s been five years.

@Dorianlynskey @drjennings Given the way the guy who owns the platform is behaving I don't see how you expect this to work? "What good is a phone call if you're unable to speak?" Your content is only gonna be shown to people who need to see it by mistake. Meanwhile it will be used to enrich the platform.

@colinrtalbot You are not going to "win" a fight with the guy who owns the platform you're using. You might reach some people with some good content. But at the end of the day making that content supports the platform. This is like trying to fight God by praying.

So, this triggered a lot more discussion than I expected. And lots of positive comments from people I admire, people I know and lots I don’t. Thanks. Can’t reply to you all. But overwhelming message is - stay and ‘fight’. For now at least. But have a plan B (sky in my case).

wow. an amazing 325 page google strategy document quietly unsealed buried in google antitrust docket. It's gonna take a long thread but I have pulled out the gems. It's from 2017 planning, no doubt Google will just say these were only ideas but many will look very familiar. /1

@swardley If it's a Govt run BBC style org it can also have legislation & Govt ID used to keep out fake reviews. Again incentives for companies are poorly aligned to make a good review site. We had the IT revolution but with the rise of ad-tech it's now a disinformation revolution. 4/4

@swardley My idea - a nationalized "which magazine" that provides consumers info. Tax funded to fix incentives. Primary legislation to make paying reviewers illegal, big companies must register products, sectors decide what specs to provide. Love to see this with a GDS style UI. 3/

X : What is the link between evolution, intelligence, wealth and the market? Me : Where did that come from? Ok, components in a competitive value chain evolve from genesis to commodity. That evolution is driven by combined actors actions. As components evolve they enable new sources of wealth i.e. genesis begets evolution begets genesis.
