Recently, I had a meeting with a lesser-known auditing firm and asked a simple question along the lines of: "What's your moat? Why should a startup founder choose you over the established industry leaders?" The response? "You're direct and a little bit unprofessional." If a founder is offended by a straightforward query about differentiation, they're going to struggle when customers, investors, and partners ask much tougher questions. The market rewards companies that can clearly articulate why they deserve to win. Do I think this firm can become a category leader with that mindset? Well, the answer requires no leap of imagination. The best operators don't label tough questions as unprofessional, they welcome them and utilize them to sharpen their competitive edge.
