When he says “illegal tax,” that’s not hyperbole. The WA state constitution forbids income taxes, but the legislature passed one anyway because they expect the liberal state Supreme Court to rewrite the constitution. It’s an affront to rule of law.

@pmddomingos I run a $1.1 billion RIA in Tacoma with 19 employees. We also have several WA based PE investments. Been here my entire life. We are leaving. I will not pay an illegal tax to an out of control government who will simply piss the money away

Interesting Cea Weaver background. In 2019, her "crowning achievement" was a hyper-restrictive new housing law that banned landlords from raising rents on rent-controlled units when tenants move out and removed their ability to raise rents to pay for renovations. This led directly to the failure of at least one bank, Signature Bank, because of high exposure to NYC real estate. The FDIC took over the their $15 billion in apartment mortgages, but couldn't find a buyer, so they had to turn them over to a series of lefty NGOs and nonprofits funded with NYC public entitlement money. Put simply, she nationalized $15 billion in NYC housing and brought it under her control. I'm telling you hese people have a plan. She's only 37. Mamdani is 34. This is not going to be de Blasio round 2.

@Alonso_GD You’re creating a false binary between stigmatizing X as barbarism and endeavoring to understand why people do X. On the contrary, I may recognize, rightly, that X is barbaric while also trying to understand the barbarian mindset.

See, if you treat suicide bombing as “barbarism” - “what kind of culture does this?”, you’ll respond with an “exterminate all the brutes” kind of mindset. If you instead see it as a type of modern political violence, you can understand the politics and address root causes
Eyal Yakoby@EYakoby

“Suicide bombing needs to be understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized.” These are the words of Zohran Mamdani’s father, a current professor at Columbia.

@ingelramdecoucy Even if the owner wants to increase rent—after the terms of the lease expires—“for the sake of it,” so what? It’s HIS house, not yours.

@ingelramdecoucy It’s more than that. Economic illiteracy is bad enough. More fundamentally, they have zero respect for ownership. Ppl like this think the house belongs to them, that they have a right to more than they contracted for.

@IJSanders Could it be about discussing the state of things? This bit you’ve shared says that “It will contain a set of tables analysing and comparing the principal facts as to the ***state*** of trade and the money market in a new and comprchensive manner.”

This from, of all places, the Freemason in Feb 1878 gives a bit of context as to how it began. But I haven't found anything that explains its bizarre title. I'm guessing "Statist" was simply short for statistics? (And not an endorsement of "The State"?)

So there was a British mag published from 1878 into the 20 C, & relaunched for a bit in the 1960s, called "The Statist," but instead of being about how awesome government is it covered business & econ & competed with The Economist & the FT?

@avidseries @yhdistyminen How about you and other NIMBYs “save enough money to buy” properties yourself, and then choose not to build on it? Property rightfully belongs to its owner. If I want to build a “zoomerbox” on my own land, I should be able to do so, without you having even the slightest say.

"A distant central government couldn't care less about the welfare and character of that community" is exactly why distant central governments should overrule communities. "Welfare and character" almost always boils down to "we want infinite free parking and no renters".

@michaelbd Is Cruz suggesting we annihilate Iran’s entire population? If the plan were to force a leadership change, rather than blow up the Death Star, then of course it’d be relevant to know the Death Star’s population.
