...and sometimes (rarely), reversed much later. Such statistics underscore the need for a robust defence, which would prevent (or at least reduce ) the conviction of innocents, who would, for the most part, be from economically disadvantaged communities. 7/8

This #IWD2022 please take note of the continuing violations under the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act of #SL. Four decades of advocacy later, reform still eludes those affected. Rights of women and children, and minority rights can and ought to coexist. Support #ReformMMDANow

It’s 2022 and Sri Lankan Muslim women continue to face discrimination under the current MMDA and Quazi system. Urgent and comprehensive MMDA reforms are a must! No more delays! @MOJSriLanka @ShamirZavahir #ReformSL #ReformMMDAnow #FreeOurFamilyLaws

AG's dept media release addresses misinformation on discharge of 3 suspects linked to Lasantha Wickrematunga's killing, stating inter alia, that the discharge ▪︎ Didn't pertain to the murder, but an alleged abduction 6 years after ▪︎ No bar to charges on fresh evidence ⬇️

There is a real need for political will on law reform concerning children and women in Sri Lanka. The reforms proposed to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) are in line with Islamic jurisprudence, with constitutional equality for Muslims and prevention of harm.
MPLRAG@mplreforms

We applaud the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus of Sri Lanka, under leadership of Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj, for prioritising law reform relating to children & specifically for calling to enforce a common minimum age of marriage for all communities. mmdasrilanka.org/statement-mplr…

@thapaleng Agree that villas need not be given. Was highlighting that IF a house is not given, all the needs to be given is allowance equal to 1/3 of monthly pension...

@SurenFernando What is appropriate is a house in the ministerial housing scheme. What is not appropriate is one bugger and his bloody offspring sponging off public funds. If they want luxury housing they can pay for it. No where does it say they need to be given villas.

S.2 of the Presidential Entitlements Act requires the provision to every former President the use of "an appropriate residence" free of rent. The Act states that if such a residence is not provided, a monthly allowance equivalent to 1/3 of the monthly pension should be provided.

A U-turn to what was promised by @anuradisanayake in his manifesto only a few weeks ago (see slide capturing the promise) Is this a sign that election pledges only matter pre election? @Dr_HariniA @BimalRathnayake @VraieB #SriLanka #Elections2024 #PTA

@sarojpathi My limited point is that there was space for Parliament to challenge the PM, if in fact he did not command the confidence of Parliament. Parliament chose not to challenge that.

Beg to disagree Suren. There was no coalition in place, President Sirisena was supported by only a handful of MPs who broke away from Rajapaksa regime. Further, PM DM Jayaratne refused to resign but Rajapaksas didn't raise any objection when MS appointed RW. Perhaps a RW-MR deal?
Suren Fernando@SurenFernando

@sarojpathi @RW_SRILANKA @anuradisanayake Parliament was convened thereafter, and IF, as you suggest, the PM did not command the confidence of Parliament, Parliament could have passed a NCM. It is my understanding that, at the time, there was a coalition in place between the UNP and MPs supporting President Sirisena. 1/2

@SurenFernando Since the appointment is going to be based on the "opinion of the President", is it legit to make an appointment based on an irrational and impractical opinion? @SurenFernando

Article 43(4) of the Constitution: "The President shall appoint as Prime Minister the Member of Parliament, who, in the President's opinion, is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament."
luwie niranjan@LuwieNiranjan

Dear @NPPSLOfficial @anuradisanayake this will be your first official task as President. Please don't mess it up! There are constitutional ways to do these things & there are politically expedient ways of doing it. Hope you follow the former (1/2)
