Two hospitals in the same city (7.7 miles apart). Same procedures. Look at the cash prices. This is what healthcare cost variation actually looks like — and why employers and patients who don't comparison-shop end up paying the difference. Take a look at the network "discounts". The ACA was designed to subsidize coverage *because* health care is very expensive, which makes health insurance is very expensive.

A Mom in Tulsa called 3 health systems last week asking the price of her son's tonsillectomy. Health system A: "We cannot quote you a price." Health system B: "Pricing depends on your insurance." Health system C: "Our financial counselor will reach out after the procedure." No other industry in America gets to operate this way. Imagine ordering at a restaurant and getting the bill six weeks after dinner.

I’m done asking permission to advocate for patients and for the future of healthcare. We know these problems because we are the ones living them. And when healthcare workers unite instead of staying divided, we become something incredibly powerful. @SurgeryCenterOK Many people r making the mistake of thinking that we just need better governing, more expert wonky wonks adjusting things 'better.' But that's the problem. Govt can't ever replace actual people making decisions about what's right and best for them. When people shop, prices drop.

Yes, we don't have a free market, so let's develop a free market! We need independent physicians, the elimination of site-dependent fees, Stark and CON laws, and price transparency. Patients need to shop for their routine care and reserve health insurance for catastrophic issues.
