A tribute to Pat Carney, the person timescolonist.com/opinion/a-trib… via @timescolonist
Not that I agreed with her politics, but she did work hard to save Canada's lighthouses. Trevor Lautens has given her a great write-up.

This article contains the first image (that I have seen), copied below, of apparent surface rupture during the M7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake. It appears to show about 3 meters of left lateral displacement. The report is from Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir. veryansintv.com/prof-dr-sozbil…

After a week of sub -30 temperatures, we're dreaming of this past summer. This year there were a lot of really neat archaeological and palaeontological finds around the territory, including this skull. Do you recognize what animal this skull belongs to? #FossilFriday #FieldFriday

@DalorisG Glad it was just a bump! Congratulations on your retirement. I know you won't have any problem finding lots to do.

16 years of incident-free commuting on Hwys 11 and 400 to #Barrie, Vaughan, and Mississauga…I’m retiring at the end of the year. Yesterday was my LAST day in the office, LAST time on that Dunlop ramp, LAST commute home … bumped in the backend near Bayfield. The gods laugh …

@globeandmail This is sad news. In 2019, Lilia Zaharieva co-authored an article, "Understanding and Responding to Pain and Pain-based Behaviour with Youth In and From Care". Well worth a read: doi.org/10.18357/ijcyf…

@SChandraHerbert I hope the new buildings going up on Shelbourne in Saanich will have enough room in front for a sidewalk shaded by large trees. It's much pleasanter to walk on a street that has big shade trees, as so many of our streets do.

@Laelaps In 1944, in the midst of WWII, George Orwell wrote a column in which he celebrated the beauty of roses. How could he think it appropriate to celebrate beauty at such at time? Like you, he felt it important to rejoice when possible! (Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit, p. 92)

@CurrieMuseum I enjoyed today's bloodless battle, especially the descriptions of how the dinosaurs move through the environment and confront each other. I noticed that when I clicked the "Back" button, I was taken to last year's match-ups. Looking forward to the next one!

@JenLucPiquant That's one reason why the book is usually more satisfying than the movie!

@aliciakennedy In the early '70s, I was lucky enough to find Caroline Ackerman's The No Fad, Good Food $5 a Week Cookbook: Cooking with Natural Basic Foods. Lots of information about nutrition and what staples to stock, as well as good bean recipes, and Barry's Killer Lasagna!

@Laelaps Where I grew up in Northwestern Ontario, "guys" was all-inclusive (which agrees with Oxford, btw). At the women's church group, you'd hear "C'mon, you guys" (or "youse guys" from the Maritimers). My brothers and I were "you guys" because Mom objected to "you kids" (baby goats!).

@SweetLadySwan @Peorhum @JeffreyLuscombe And for 25 cents you could get a book to paste them in! We collected dinosaurs, tropical birds, African animals, and North American butterflies, birds, animals, and wildflowers. I learned a lot from them.

@Peorhum @JeffreyLuscombe Yes, I remember my mum had a set of bird pictures.
