@butleriano Isn’t Serbian and Croatian the same language but with different alphabets? A teacher in school taught me that.

@SvanGurra @Nordix_XY That happened to many languages in Italy as well. Sardinian is facing imminent extinction because of that. Back then, people didn't realize (or didn't want to) that children can be easily taught two or three languages without much of a struggle.

Does anyone know why Italians don't speak Italian in NYC anymore? It's been a large community there since the 1800s and it's not like they're too dumb to not write papers or have their own radio stations. Italian seems to be completely gone while yiddish is a small minority.

@archixander @Nordix_XY Same for Swedes. The local dialects where to hard to understand so the teachers literally beat the dialect out of the schoolkids if they didn’t speak the standardized Swedish we speak today.

@Nordix_XY Italian was a minority language in Italy until the50s. They used to speak their own regional languages. Most of the Italians that entered the US in the XIX and XX c. wern't literate, English was easier as a lingua franca among Italians than speaking a babel of different dialects.

@SvanGurra Cope. American culture is self-evidently orders of magnitude more appealing than Chinese culture. Hence why folks flock to #1 and ignore #2, except when they want cheap shit.

Irish Diaspora are Irish, will always be Irish, and pretty much nothing they say or do can erase history or take away the fact they were born with Irish blood in their veins. The best thing to do is come home, have children, and become part of Ireland. Never give them an inch.

@TexasRose1836 The reformation here in Sweden was also largely driven by political ambitions and adopting the religion of Russia was unthinkable for the Swedish aristocracy and the peasants. The Russian Orthodox Church in Stockholm goes back to the 1600s and Swedes was not allowed to convert.

What if Martin Luther had actually followed through on his admiration for the Eastern Church? Early in the Reformation, Luther and his circle looked to the Orthodox Church as a witness against Rome's innovations; rejecting papal supremacy, indulgences, purgatory, and more. They saw in the Greek Church a more ancient, apostolic continuity. There were even attempts at communication: Lutherans sent the Augsburg Confession to Constantinople, hoping for alliance or understanding. He could have humbled himself, crossed the cultural and geographic divide, and entered the True Church that had guarded the Faith unchanged for centuries. No need for a brand new religious system. No sola scriptura experiment. No splintering of Christendom into thousands of denominations. But ego got in the way. Instead of submitting to the historic Church, Luther built his own. The man who railed against the Pope's authority became the new authority himself. Pride turned a call for reform into a revolution that fractured the West. History's great tragedy: a man who saw glimpses of the ancient Faith, but couldn't let go of being at the center.

@lymanstoneky There is no such thing, Vikings carved short sentences into stones to commemorate stuff. They did not write any longer texts at all. They passed everything down orally. Monks wrote down these legends hundreds of years after Christianity became the dominant religion here.

Actually, you can read non-Christian Viking/Norse literature and find it is not alien, not alien at all, in fact immediately accessible and totally familiar The Greeks and Romans are alien Vikings didn’t become Christian. Christianity became Scandinavian.
Aleph@woke8yearold

I think the serious answer is that modern Western culture started during the Middle Ages and evolved out of Christendom. We imagine a connection to the Classical World that mostly isn’t real. Spengler got this right, the non-Christian world would be utterly alien to us
