Yes. The biggest reason was that Tenzin wanted children to continue the Air Nomad culture, while Lin Beifong did not. As the youngest son of Aang and essentially the last Airbending master at the time, Tenzin carried enormous pressure to rebuild an entire civilization after the Air Nomad genocide. Lin’s personality and life goals were very different she was deeply committed to her work has police chief, and it’s strongly implied she never wanted a large family, or possibly children at all. Then Pema entered Tenzin’s life. She openly admired him, shared his spiritual values, and wanted to build a family with him. According to the show’s backstory, Pema confessed her feelings to Tenzin while he was still with Lin, and eventually Tenzin ended the relationship. It was painful for Lin, and you can still feel some lingering bitterness early in the series, but neither side was really portrayed as wrong. They simply wanted very different futures.

The fact that "The Last Emperor" was even allowed to be made is a historical miracle, an absolute miracle. It could never have been more before that point, and it could never be made today. The Deng government gave Bertolucci and his Western film crew control of the Forbidden City for 2 months! You think Xi is giving Christopher Nolan or Denis Villenueve the entire Forbidden City for 2 months? Plus, there's a climactic sequence of the movie openly critical of the Cultural Revolution, and the Deng govt was OK with this. It probably helped that Bertolucci was "Communist but also cmon lets get real finally" in way that matched Deng Thought.

Today we scouted for our upcoming bushcrafting event. Upon leaving the forest we spotted a Garmin in the middle of the road. Picked it up, it was activated with a return #. Called the number, White dude who was visiting his brother from Spokane, fell off his bike while him and his brother were up in the hills. He asked if we would just ship it to him and he would Venmo us money for beer and thanked us over and over and said how rare it is that anyone would go through the effort to return something lost.
