Theologian JD Hall to Tucker Carlson: The Muslim rulers didn't tax churches during the Ottoman period. They were very kind to Christians. As a matter of fact, they took care of our holy sites. Alright. Something of a firecracker for my EO friends. The below is, per EO, not a crumb-size weight for the Papacy since it lacks all the details of Vatican 1. But could you imagine how quick some EO would put a period on the debate on icons if they could find a famous saint saying something like “I worship Jesus Christ and venerate His image on wood, wall, or any surface,” in the 4th century? Here we have a clear and emphatic statement about the norm of communion in Peter’s throne in Rome for a man residing in Syria, near the Antiochene-Petrine throne, and it is reduced to less than a crumb of evidence. And yet the EO are satisfied with the mere passing reference to the possession of images in the pre Nicene era and proclaim that Nicaea 787 is therein fully fleshed out.
