I had a phone call earlier today with @MBA_AlThani_, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar. Sweden condemns Iran’s attacks on Qatar and other countries in the region. Qatari hospitality and assistance to stranded Swedish citizens and other foreign nationals is greatly appreciated.

Sweden strongly condemns Iran’s continued attacks on neighbouring countries, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. These attacks are increasingly reaching civilian targets and must stop.

We see a serious escalation of events in Iran and the region. Together with the EU, Sweden has already imposed sanctions on the Iranian regime. We stand with the brave Iranian people. Their rights must be respected. The Iranian regime has killed thousands of its own citizens. Sweden knows well what the Iranian regime is willing to do to innocent people, including citizens of other countries. It is in Sweden’s and Europe’s interest that Iran is never able to develop nuclear weapons. Iran’s nuclear program and its support for terrorist groups have for a long time been a destabilizing factor. Sweden stands by our allies. We call for restraint, the protection of civilians, and respect for international law. Swedes in the region are urged to follow the travel advice of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. We are closely monitoring how Swedish security is affected. I will convene a meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the implications for Sweden and the safety of Swedish citizens.

The retaliatory attacks and violations of territorial integrity by Iran on a number of countries in the region are unacceptable. I have been in contact with several of my colleagues in the region to express the solidarity of the Swedish government. Diplomatic efforts must resume without delay.
