Maybe doable with dsDNA-coating fiber-forming proteins like RecA and RAD51? If you could get a readout for un-polymerized protein, then you could measure DNA length by testing different RecA expression / conc These fibers are nucleated and stopped by other proteins, which you could fuse to dna-binding proteins. Localizing these START and STOP at two places in your plasmid may let you roughly measure the intervening length

PCR, restriction cloning, Golden Gate. So many core DNA techniques started with a natural enzyme then figured out a use for it Has anyone tried to reverse engineer this? Is there a wishlist of plausible DNA enzyme activities that, if they existed, would be the next CRISPR?

@GallowayLabMIT One could argue that attaining tenure often requires enduring Dickensian conditions so your kid is definitely on to something with that correlation 😂

Kid 1: who's the best actor? Jim Carrey? Kid 2: what about Charles Dickens? Me: Dickens is a writer. Kid 3: Dickens isn't a writer. Me: Yes, he is. Kid 3: No, He's dead. His profession is being dead. He has years of experience....He has tenure. 💀😂

Also, if anyone has recommendations for things to do, places to check out, or churches in the area, I’m all ears 🤩

Just moved to Boston to take up a professorship at a liberal arts college in the area. Expect more memes soon from the other side of academia!

You are encoding 3 genes on a single transcript. What do you call the cassette? if you have a rationale, that would be great for comments! #synbio

@RuxandraTeslo Ironically the exception to this was probably people who could afford to take up years of relatively poor-paying academic positions because they had incredible financial backing from their families

@RuxandraTeslo I wonder if people also still have a somewhat antiquated impression of academia from a time when research was mainly conducted by people from the upper class because they were the ones who could afford the necessary education and training.

A lot of people dunking on me for this cuz false modesty blah blah. 5 things: 1) I’d like them to get familiarised with the UK class system. 2) those thinking I’m gonna be rich: look up average UK salaries for scientists

I find it a bit weird that people consider PhD students at top unis “elites” ( a big part of right wing discourse is focused against these “elites”) There’s an entire actually elite world I was not aware of before going to Oxford. The actual elites don’t do science PhDs, lol.

@RuxandraTeslo When I was at Oxford, I remembered most of the posh people were not studying biochem, and even less likely pursue a Ph.D. in biochem.
