@davepl1968 I count myself as a pretty big space nut, and I know I wasn't watching. For some reason, I turned on TV before I headed out to class that morning, and I saw the plume left over from explosion and started listening and watching the replay.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.
