@specialopsmag All very good, but I feel that Hamburger Hill deserves a nomination. Excellent and underrated movie - it had the bad luck to come out at the same time as the (IMHO) the much overrated Platoon.

When Jane Fonda went political with her speech at the National Audubon Society, she probably didn't expect to be heckled...by Kelsey Grammer. "I'm sorry, Jane," Grammer said as he interrupted her monologue about Trump, "But this banquet is about birds and people who wish to donate money to protect them. Do you think you could stay on topic?" Fonda answered by reminding him that she has a history of using public platforms for politics. "Which is why I'm amazed that anyone invites you anywhere," Grammer fired back, "It's getting a little bit old."

A retired lawyer in the U.S. was watching the news when he saw the story about the new Trump commemorative coin and something immediately didn't sit right with him. So he did what lawyers do. He went digging... And he found it. A federal law passed in 1866 that explicitly prohibits living people from appearing on U.S. currency. It's not a grey area. It's not open to interpretation. It's been sitting in the books for over 150 years. The last time this actually happened was 1926 when a coin featuring Calvin Coolidge was minted while he was still alive and serving as president. The backlash was immediate. The coins were pulled. And the law was reaffirmed... Now this retired lawyer has filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Mint not because of who is on the coin, but because the law says it simply cannot be done. Full stop... No political agenda. No protest. Just one guy, a dusty legal statute, and a federal case that nobody in Washington apparently saw coming

I just got a call from Reform UK, asking, as a member, if I would help deliver leaflets in my area. I told him I wouldn’t, and that I’m no longer a member. “Oh, we’ve got you down as a member. Why did you leave?” For many reasons, but the most important one for me was when Farage announced Yusuf joining the party’s leadership, and that I didn’t want Islam to play any part in shaping Britain’s future. Unusually, he said that he didn’t either, which sounded odd, knowing Yusuf is head of party policy, Farage’s flip-flopping and total disinterest and criticism of the rape gang enquiry and his silence on Halal slaughter. The call ended amicably. Sitting here now thinking of the dozens of other reasons why I left, and how many, like me, are still being counted as members.

@RayNothstine @VoicesofWW2 Saying that Ambrose wasn't particularly good at fact checking is like saying that Genghis Khan wasn't particularly good at getting on with his neighbours. Or that the Spanish Inquisition wasn't particularly good at religious tolerance.

@VoicesofWW2 There are actually quite a few big errors and this is because Steven Ambrose wasn’t particularly good at fact checking. He also took a lot of things Dick Winters and others said as gospel and never bothered to fact check. Winters is a hero but remembrances can change.

🧵Band of Brothers came out 25 years ago and is STILL the gold standard for war TV. But how accurate is it really? I went deep into what historians, military experts, and the actual Easy Company veterans had to say 👇

@avi7576 The correct answer is 12 - each number on the left is multiplied by the number one higher. So 3 x 4 = 12. However, there is also a wrong answer. It's "Maths", not "Math".

@NaughtiusMaxi10 @specialopsmag @FennellJW I think you will find that the George Cross is equal in merit to the Victoria Cross. The distinction is not about the level of courage or the value of the award, but about whether or not the action was "in the face of the enemy". Therefore the GC is 1=, not second.

@specialopsmag @FennellJW Being pedantic, the CGC isn’t the second highest UK military decoration- that’s the GC. The CGC is the second highest for actions in the face of the enemy.

Christian Craighead. British Special Air Service (SAS). The man known as Obi-Wan Nairobi, his actions on January 15, 2019 became legend. Christian was in Kenya training local forces when five al-Shabaab terrorists launched a coordinated attack using explosives, arson, and mass shooting. Off duty and out shopping, Craighead kitted up from the back of his car, raced to the scene, organized Kenyan police and military units, and then went in alone. He repeatedly entered the building, engaging terrorists and pulling out hostages floor by floor. By the end he was credited with helping save over 700 civilian lives. He was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, the second highest military decoration in the United Kingdom. Then the same government that decorated him tried to stop him from ever telling the story.

@NewForestRamble If I recall correctly, the screw thread on the button was the opposite way to normal (so "leftie tightie, rightie loosie") to defeat any German searches.

It contains a hidden compass, so if he was shot down over enemy territory, he had a small chance of escape. Sleep's button compass was revealed by unscrewing it. It was quite ingenious and designed by Mi9.

If you're ever at the former RAF Beaulieu, see if you can find the plaque to David Mackie Sleep in the remaining runway section. Sleep led the crew out of Beaulieu to achieve a first - sinking a German u-boat with a RAF Liberator laden with depth charges. 🧵

VETERANS IN THE WORKPLACE One of the main things you’ll notice straight away in the workplace is that you speak a different language to your civvy co-workers. For instance, saying Ease Springs, GAS… GAS… GAS… after a loud fart won’t mean anything to them. They’ll stand there amazed with your list of phrases for going to the toilet, ‘Right I’m going for a sh*t… I’m off for a dump… or I’m off to give birth.’ When your stapler stops working, and you carry out stoppage drills, ‘Stapler stops, on looking inside…’ They’ll think you’ve totally lost it! Don’t worry, they’ll get used to these phrases, in fact some of them might even be adopted by them over the next few years. My advice at the beginning is to print off a military acronyms list, so your co-workers can understand you. A phonetic alphabet chart wouldn’t go amiss. The last thing you want to hear in the office is S for sugar instead of Sierra and M for Mother instead of Mike, it will really annoy the sh*t out of you. Don’t even bother with the ‘at the end of the day we’ve got to make sure that we are singing off the same song-sheet’. If push comes to shove, we’ve got to be hot-to-trot from the word "go". It’s a whole new ball game. We need to run a tight ship, and all that b*ll*cks. Your co-workers will think you’re nuts. Another good piece of advice is, don’t take your sense of humour too far. It could land you in trouble. At the beginning, take it easy, a few c*ck jokes will be ok, but what was funny and accepted in the military, will not have the same effect at work. For instance, leaving human t*rds in amusing places around the workplace won’t be appreciated by your colleagues. You need to build up to something like that. Warning! If easily offended, I really do advise you not to read this book. ENDEX book a must read for all Military… clivewardauthor.com UK kindle also available in paperback amazon.co.uk/EndEx-Clive-Wa…

@higgyboson You clearly don't like Zahawi, but you ignore the good things he's done. Like making sure that his horses had nice cosy stables (courtesy of the taxpayer). And quickly coughing up £5m in unpaid tax (a small oversight due to forgetting about a few offshore funds - easily done).

Despite not being a great fan of Nigel Farage, I thought I'd found a political home when he founded Reform. But my initial enthusiasm waned once he started packing the party with Tory ship jumpers. And then he did something absolutely unforgivable as far as I'm concerned. He welcomed Nadhim Zahawi to his gang. During covid Zahawi was tasked with getting as many injections into people's arms as possible. He actively promoted the jab for 12 year olds despite knowing there was absolutely no safety data whatsoever on the possible short, medium or longterm side effects. It was all "jab, jab, jab" with Zahawi. And sod the consequences. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from a very nasty "man". A man with no common touch, very little evidence of humility and possessing all the charm of an executioner on a Friday afternoon in a medieval village after several kids have been caught stealing bread. He showed his true self at the press conference where his arrival at Reform was announced. Just one question from a journalist about his involvement in the national jab fest was met with such a disgusting response that no one could have been in any doubt about the character of this horrendous individual. So Reform will NEVER get my vote. Not in a million years.
